[SOLVED] Canon CQue CUPS job status=stopped "Filter failed"

Postby morgano » Jul 30th, '14, 00:30

I love mga5 :)
It manages both hibernate and suspend on thinkpad R61 and T61, which fail for both mga3,4 and fedora 20.
It also do that amazingly quick and seem snappy overall.
So I am switching two production systems to mga5 already :)

I have just one problem so far: printing (to network attached printer) i get satus:
stopped
"Filter failed"

Any idea what i should check or try?

Where is a log?
http://localhost:631/admin/log/error_log just gives "Not Found"

I followed the same procedure i described here and was working for same printer on mga2,3,4 and fedora:

Maybe it's a similar issue as https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_4_Err ... pt_filters or related to https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_4_Err ... ig-printer

For the log, you can try
Code: Select all
systemctl status cups -a -n25
or
Code: Select all
journalctl -b -u cups

Logs are also still written also to normal files to /var/log/cups/

Thanks Florian
You always give prompt and good info
I do not see much similarity to the mga4 issues, and for me this printer have worked perfectly all time on mga4 (and 2 and 3)

journalctl -b -u cups give some hints i will follow up.
It seem to want /usr/share/cups/drivers/pscript5.dll , and also say /bin/bash: sicgsfilter: command does not exist.
Neither of the files are found in a mga5 package, nor in bugzilla.

Also in the log: "Unknown directive BrowseAddress on line 6 of /etc/cups/cupsd.conf." but I do not know if it is relevant. Line 6 is:
BrowseAddress @LOCAL

Log also say "Job stopped due to filter errors; please consult the error_log file for details."

Latter seems to be part of Canons propr. driver: http://it.software.canon-europe.com/sof ... 044596.asp also found via http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/updates/s ... ilter.html

Ah yes, the canon cque package had istalled it already at /opt/cel/bin/sicgsfilter
Who should we bug about it not being found per default?
(canon- who have not responded to other of my feedback - or cups or mageia ? )

pscript5.dll do not exist on the system. Internet searching tells it is a Microsoft file, can be found for download, and that cups want it ( http://www.bsmdevelopment.com/Reference ... _CUPS.html) in /usr/share/cups/drivers but that drivers folder do not exist on my system.

I will continue by investigating how it is on the working mga4 install next time i have time.

Canon. cups filters should go to /usr/lib/cups/filter
cups or Mageia cannot magically know if you drop some filter into some arbitrary directory that it should be included into cups config.

I simply created a symbolic link for sicgsfilter to resolve the isue with that.
One result is that pscript5.dll is not mentioned in the log anymore, maybe it is not needed when sicsgsfiter is found.
Enabled debugging and got more output, a part:
{'printer-state-message': u'loadFilename failed: open /var/spool/cups/d00006-001: Permission denied',
'printer-state-reasons': [u'none']}
Page 7 (Verify packages):
{'packages_verification': {'cups': ['..?...... c /etc/cups/cups-files.conf',
'S.?...GT. c /etc/cups/cupsd.conf',
'..?...... /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default',
'......G.. n /etc/cups/ppd',
'..?...... c /etc/cups/snmp.conf',
'......G.. n /etc/cups/ssl',
'..?...... /usr/lib/cups/backend/dnssd',
'..?...... /usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp',
'..?...... /usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd',
'......G.. /var/cache/cups',
'......G.. /var/spool/cups',
'missing /var/spool/cups/tmp (Permission denied)'],
'foomatic': ['package foomatic is not installed'],
'gutenprint': ['package gutenprint is not installed'],
'hpijs': ['package hpijs is not installed'],
'hplip': ['missing /var/log/hp/tmp (Permission denied)'],
'system-config-printer': []}}

Why the "permission denied" lines?;
Code: Select all
# ls -al /var/log/hp/tmp
totalt 8
drwxrwxr-T 2 root lp 4096 jul  5 20:00 ./
drwxrwxr-- 3 root lp 4096 aug  4 14:05 ../
[root@bamse .hplip]# ls -al /var/spool/cups/tmp
totalt 8
drwxrwx--T 2 root lp 4096 aug  4 14:06 ./
drwx--x--- 3 root lp 4096 aug  4 10:13 ../

Wrong owner or permission?
The file /var/spool/cups/d00006-001 is gone when I looked for it now, maybe deleted by the printing system.
Packages of the exact name as cups say is missing do not exist in repo, now i installed task-printing to get "everything" available.
(the canon package installed some deps, and when i entered printers in MCC some more got pulled, but maybe some deps are missing)
-reboot-
Works!
(except for the log link in cups. is that a cups bug or missing mageia adaptation?)

Yes, at http://localhost:631/admin the buttons "View Error Log" (pointing to http://localhost:631/admin/log/error_log) and "View Page Log" (pointing to http://localhost:631/admin/log/page_log) both return "Not Found". They are also broken on my mga4 system, and there results in a blank screen (not even "Not Found" so the handling of the error is improved on mga5). The "View Acess Log" button works on mga4 and mga5.

Then please report that as a bug, after searching if it hasn't been reported yet already: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly
