[SOLVED] "mp4a" audio or video formats.

Postby szltam5863 » Mar 6th, '13, 22:00

The in vlc I get this error message during the Mageia 2.

VLC does not support (s) "mp4a" audio or video formats. Sorry, can not do anything about correcting this.

I use this command: rpm -qa | grep vlc

I received this:

vlc-plugin-common-2.0.3-2.4.mga2
vlc-2.0.3-2.4.mga2
vlc-plugin-theora-2.0.3-2.4.mga2
vlc-plugin-pulse-2.0.3-2.4.mga2
libvlccore5-2.0.3-2.4.mga2
libvlc5-2.0.3-2.4.mga2

How can i install mp4a audio or video formats?

In Mageia Control Centre>Software>SoftwareMedia enable the 'Tainted' and 'Tainted Updates' online repository then do your software updates. vlc will then be upgraded to the 'tainted' version.

Also install gstreamer0.10-faad to allow gstreamer to play mp4 files, and if you use xine media player install xine-faad

Now your issue seems to be solved, will you please be so kind marking the topic as such?
You can do so by editing the first message in the topic, and pre-fix the subject/title with the tag [SOLVED].

Thanks in advance!!! ;)

This is a rider to the subject of these posts...

Although vlc from the tainted repositories is running fine on two of my systems, one a testbed for mga5 alpha2, I could not get it to install from tainted for an older mga4 test system. I got into a tangled mess even though the tainted repositories were enabled. It seemed that whatever I did the untainted repositories took precedence so I added a restriction to the good Doktor's command and it worked fine.
Code: Select all
urpme -a vlc --auto && urpmi vlc --media tainted --auto
urpmi svlc --media tainted

Thanks again doktor5000 for your guidance.

Hey, I just installed Mageia release 5 (Official) for x86_64 and pleased to come back to the familiar urpm* tools after a junket through various debian-based distros.

I got
VLC could not decode the format "mp4a" (MPEG AAC Audio)
and wound up at this thread. Running your provided commanded produced formidable results, starting with the removal of 410 packages :!: At the end, VLC played my .mkv fine, including audio. Thanks!

However, I had a konqueror file browser open and, when I tried to change directories, I got
There appears to be a configuration error. You have associated Konqueror with inode/directory, but it cannot handle this file type.
Google showed a recent Mint user solved this error by installing Dolphin, so I re-installed it and konqueror seems to be working, again.

FWIW, a 116KB, 1521-line (when wrapped) text file of the command output is attached.

Yep, you basically removed nearly your whole KDE. You might want to try to install task-kde4 again.
Problem is that phonon-vlc belongs to KDE base packages, and removing that will recursively remove KDE

But to be fair, this was meant for the OP as he showed the output of rpm -qa | grep vlc previously hence I wrote that command based on that.
It would have been safer asking beforehand ;)

Ok, installing task-kde4 brought me a bonus 127 extra packages and, after all 537 were onboard, my next hurdle of mounting GF's usb-connected mtp device was solved.
Hopefully, it will be smooth sailing from here on out. ImageThanks!

urpmi task-kde4

This clue is in the thread where doktor5000 replies to me and I got functionality back by listening to him.

are you saying that the aac codec is managed by task-kde4?
because when i type task-kde4 in the MCC, all i see is 250 MO of ..... files i'm reluctant to install, such as 100 MO of games ....

Code: Select all
urpmi task-kde4-minimal

will install the most commonly used KDE4 applications, including konsole.

To get all of the available codecs, enable the tainted repo's and install task-codec-audio and task-codec-video.

urpmi task-kde4-minimal has not been used this time : my mag5 was so new i simply reinstall it :)

now for the aac codec, the tainted repos and task-codec thingies are not sufficient.

i'm still on it and see if i can get more tainted codecs in the mix.
