No sound following update to mga7

Postby srowe » Aug 5th, '19, 14:00

I've run into a number of issues since I updated my mga6 installation to mga7 at the weekend. One issue is that pulseaudio doesn't seem to be running

Code: Select all
bash-4.4$ ps -efw | grep pulseaudio
srowe    29324 17494  0 12:58 pts/2    00:00:00 grep pulseaudio

Trying to query its status gives me

Code: Select all
bash-4.4$ systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service -a
Failed to get properties: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1

I'm also experiencing problems when plugging USB storage and ypbind.

Seems like some session services aren't starting correctly, or there could be an issue with dbus. What's the output of the command "systemctl --user --failed"?

If it were PulseAudio alone I'd suggest you to just delete the user settings folder and relogin, but since you're saying other stuff doesn't work I'd hold off on doing that. I'd also look at the output of systemctl --user status pulseaudio.service

systemd isn't very happy

Code: Select all
bash-4.4$ systemctl --user --failed
Failed to list units: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1

Code: Select all
bash-4.4$ systemctl --user status pulseaudio.service
Failed to get properties: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1

Hmmm... No idea where to look, sorry. I'd try and see if the issue is only for your current user: create a new user, login with it, and see if you have the same problem; if you do I'd suggest you open a bug report. If the new user works fine instead, you'll know that the issue is in some configuration file in your home folder.

In any case, are there any error messages of note in the journal (command "journalctl -b -p err")?

Running as my user

Code: Select all
bash-4.4$ journalctl -b -p err
Hint: You are currently not seeing messages from other users and the system.
Users in groups 'adm', 'systemd-journal', 'wheel' can see all messages.
Pass -q to turn off this notice.

I already have a local user account (the failing one is a NIS account on an NFS file system), I'll try that shortly.

You may want to add some context information on the NIS setup. Which is your local user, and what is the NIS user?
Also there seem to be quite a few issues tied to your /home folder - is that by any chance NFS-mounted?

Best thing would be to add a full journal log as root after a clean boot.
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab > /tmp/journal.log
and later attach /tmp/journal.log here, after adding above mentioned context information.

NIS is set up with a single ypserver entry in /etc/yp.conf. The service isn't starting since upgrading to mga7, I'm having log in and start it manually. The home directory for srowe is on an NFS file system which is managed by autofs.

OK, so logging in to the local account shows the correct devices in the mixer. I've obviously got some incompatible config in my NIS account home directory. How do I track down what I need to nuke?

Seems you're still missing most of the context information. Is this your NIS server or is it only some client?
What do the logs say regarding ypbind after a regular boot (so before you would log in and start it manually - also what in particular do you start manually ?). What does the autofs configuration look like for the home folder?
What does the home directory for srowe look like at all when it's mounted, and after a fresh boot? According to the log excerpts you posted above it doesn't look like it's mounted at all ...

The logs are from my desktop client, I don't have access to the NIS server. ybind and autofs haven't ever started automatically for me for any version of Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia. Up until mga6 logging in as root and restarting them both got me /home/srowe and a working desktop.

I'll live with having to manually restart services if I can get my user account working again.

Are the journal logs you've posted from before or after you mount your remote home? If they're from before, could you please post the logs from after you've mounted it and logged into your remote account?

They were after I had logged in, the failures related to the home directory were for an attempt to login when autofs wasn't running.

Well I tried moving the entire contents of my home directory to one side and re-generating it. Same result.

I'll probably downgrade back to mga6.
