I have recently installed Skype in:

Mageia 3
PCLinuxOS
Linux Mint Gnome
Manjaro Kde

It works in none of them.
The best I can do is see and hear the caller in Mageia 3 but they can't see or hear me. The light is on on the usb Logitec cam and a video image shows up in the setup>video place. I have gotten mic response in the pulse audio setup place. I'm searching and reading for answers wherever they may be.

So the microphone is not working? Did you select the logitech usb cam or whatever you use as microphone as the default recording device, e.g. using your desktop environment mixer or maybe use pavucontrol?

Skype just doesn't seem to be seeing my web cam which is said to "work out of the box". It does work, video and mic, but Skype isn't seeing it dispite efforts to make it do that in the Skype setup and also in pavucontrol.

FWIW, just updated the MAQeia with the latest version.

Current Skype version for linux as of 04/15/2014: 4.3.0.37
ATTENTION: This version only supports pulseaudio, for more informations on this and related to skype pulseaudio support check
http://blogs.skype.com/2014/06/18/skype-4-3-for-linux/

Tried it, works fine here.

I have a problem with screen sharing after upgrade. The share option is greyed or after click on "share screen" the receiving party does not has my screen display. I try to remove skype and install again, but without positive results. Next strange thing is that I dont see WeeMe icons of accepted users. Any idea whats wrong?

Seems your skype installation is broken.

[doktor5000@Mageia4 ~]$ file /usr/share/skype/skype
/usr/share/skype/skype: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.18, BuildID[sha1]=6eef9a3f7c9719980b6e317a00ea971d3717ac89, stripped

[doktor5000@Mageia4 ~]$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so /usr/share/skype/skype
[doktor5000@Mageia4 ~]$

Code: Select all
[doktor5000@Mageia4 ~]$ rpm -V get-skype

Yes. You are 100% right. my installation of Skype is broken because of unknown reasons, after upgrade to ver 4.3.
At this moment I downgraded (for the test) to the version of get-skype available in M4 repo, but the result is the same - no screen sharing and no user pics (WeeMe`s).
So You have outputs:

Code: Select all
[root@piotr ~]# rpm -q get-skype
get-skype-4.2.0.11-5.mga4.nonfree
[root@piotr ~]# rpm -V get-skype
[root@piotr ~]#

After upgrade to new version, outputs looks like this:

Code: Select all
[root@piotr ~]# rpm -q get-skype
get-skype-4.3.0.37-1.mga5.nonfree
[root@piotr ~]# rpm -V get-skype
[root@piotr ~]#

And another strange situation I noticed. During my work on PC, I stream (using VLC) video stream from my Enigma2 based satbox. When I start Skype call, VLC stops playback video stream. In previous installation (before upgrade) it was possible to receive video stream using VLC and share screen via Skype, with VLC window inside of screen content.

I created second user on my system and fired up Skype. And it works properly!
But, during my previous tests I removed ~/.Skype dir and fired up Skype. Skype of course created new ~/.Skype dir. But after that there was not "share screen" option avaliable. Probably it is KDE related problem or Skype keeps another part of its config in different location.
The same result (non availability of "share screen" option") was when I use "dynamic" version of Skype, that is non-installer based package.

There's ~./Skype which keeps chat history and such, and ~/.config/Skype which here only holds skype.conf with one line.

I removed all "Skype" and "skype" dirs and files from the user, including ~/.Skype, ~/.config/skype, .macromedia/blablabla/skype etc.
Then I fired Skype again. Still no user pics and screen sharing.

Best ask in Skype forums or complain to Microsoft - ahh wait, they removed the public bugtracker a while ago ...

You can take a look in the logs, maybe it helps https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1232 ... -log-files

Yep! I got it! First I boot PC into text (non GUI) mode and made things like this:

Code: Select all
cp -a /home/my_user/.config /home/my_user/.config.ORG
rm -rf /home/my_user/.config

Next I boot system in normal mode. ".config" dir was build from the beginning and WORKS!!!
But ".config.ORG" does not contain any file or dir with "skype" as a part of name. Now I copy back one by one subdirs located in ".config"ORG" to ".config" and will try to "catch" which one is responsible for my troubles.
So it looks like KDE related problem and/or new Skype version installer.

The problem is solved. The error was in one of the file which is created automatically by KDE during start, located in ~/.config dir. I dont know which one. But now works perfectly! BTW M$ support is a @#$%^.

Since today Skype for Web seems to be available as beta: http://blogs.skype.com/2014/11/14/pleas ... -web-beta/
But even when switching user agent to chrome on windows, I don't see where to sign in to Skype for Web ... meh, whatever.

EDIT: Seems to be only available for windows - and that's what they call Skype for Web ... ? https://skypewebexperience.skype.com/co ... ation.html

I'm getting

bash: urpmi: command not found

The rest of this is superfluous without the command...

zaivala, you should run urpmi as a super-user. Type "su" and your root password and after that run "urpmi".

Seems to be working, they heard the user complaints ...
Works fine here under chrome, keeping a pinned tab for it.

After some successful years get-skype now crashes after the login under Mageia-5.
So I read the Wiki at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Skype_with_video which recommends to install skypeforlinux-64.rpm.

However there is a problem with a missing package libsecret.

Code: Select all
[franz@localhost Skype]$ sudo urpmi  skypeforlinux-64.rpm
Das gewünschte Paket kann nicht installiert werden:
skypeforlinux-8.11.0.4-1.x86_64 (wegen nicht erfüllter Abhängigkeit von libsecret )
Wollen Sie trotzdem fortfahren? (J/n) j
Eine schlechte Wahl, versuchen Sie es erneut
Das gewünschte Paket kann nicht installiert werden:
skypeforlinux-8.11.0.4-1.x86_64 (wegen nicht erfüllter Abhängigkeit von libsecret )

It is not possible to ignore that.

Well flink, you obviously came around this one message:

Anyway, i had to let you know of it's existence. ;)
