Artwork for Mageia 2

Postby schultz » Oct 10th, '11, 14:35

Hey all.

I have been having a look through here and there is some really great work going on, so I think that it would be beneficial if we pooled this together so that we could see what we want to include and use for Mageia 2.

There is the mageia-art group on flickr, however, as it is full, and contains many things that are not of actual use for Mageia 2, I have created Mageia 2 artwork group.

So, if you would like your work to be considered, please add it there and we can discuss what we like and don't like.

If you have anything against signing up to flickr, you can mail me your work and I will add it, watersnowrock {@} gmail.com

Wallpapers and backgrounds should be at least 1920x1440 and you should be able to provide icons in svg format.
For more info and licensing information, see the group.

So happy submitting and I look forward to seeing your work here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/Mageia-2-artwork

Thanks, Schultz

Why 1920x1440. That seems like a very wierd format. My monitor is 16:10 resolution and it's only 1920x1200. The only other common resolution at that size is at 16:9 and 1920x1080. Are you sure you didn't mean 2560x1440?

Also, is there a direction Mageia wants to be? Light? Dark? Simple? I'm sure the artwork team has a guideline they go by for official stuff.

Thats the artwork specs, see here http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=artwork:installer

I don't think that that resolution is needed, it could be changed to 1600x1200, but this is neither the time nor the place to discuss that, and as 1920x1440 is the largest resolution, it is what is required. (Obviously the other resolution are achieved by cutting then scaling the images)

Thanks.

I realized after I wrote the previous post that some older 21" CRT monitors at 4:3 used that resolution. Thanks for the reply.

Its fine, its useful to have the resolution, even if its not that common.....

Thanks for the interest.

Um.... not really a guidline, no.
There are a few issues, mainly that of licensing. All Mageia artwork will be distributed under the Creative Commons By-SA license.
Also, we had recently decided on a color palette for Mageia. I'm not sure how binding this is. We certainly don't want to cramp anybody's artistic style. ;) However, if you would like to get a feel for the color scheme that will be used you can download the palette here.
Feel free to use it, or not, at your discretion.

The link to the full license is at the group.

As for deciding the guidelines for what the artwork should be like, this is what this is for, to work out what we as a community want the distro to look like.

Ah, see? I couldn't see that because I am not part of the group. All I get is a message telling me I need to join the group to see stuff.

Better? It's just a matter of interpretation i guess.
Anyhow, i like this one. The Cauldron, the bubbles, the Mageia-logo, it's all there.
And on top, the winter, the most favorite season in the year. Another interpretation ;-)

Thank you tumbeliina!!!

Well the artwork freeze is on March 10th as per here: http://blog.mageia.org/en/2011/10/22/ne ... -mageia-2/

However, experiences from last release make me feel that we should try and have most if not all major things in place by the start of February, that way we will have time on our side this time around, and can debug the release properly.

So, yes there is a deadline, but it isn't fixed and it is a long way off.

But please, submit what you have so we can build up some ideas and get a feel for what we want, rather than having a last minute onslaught of ideas.

Well, I'll submit them as soon as I complete them. It takes some time, as I have different ideas and have to develop each of them, and sometimes the best outcome is a mix of those ideas. Does that make sense? lol Anyway, as I develop ideas and finalize them, I'll submit them. Thanks!

As a good landing place for artwork-ideas towards Mageia 2,
we think this topic opened by schultz should be qualified sticky.

At least for the period until the launch of Mageia 2, which is now planned for May 3rd 2012.

We wish all contributors lots of pleasure and great inspirations!!!!

Is your flickr account new? If so there is a 5ish day cooldown before they become visible. I also thing that you might need to have 10 images as well, but once you have the account for 5 days that doesn't matter anymore.

You live in Colmar - Nice.

Maybe you should connect the "Marketing & Communication (marcomm)-teams".
