Installing a net (wi-fi) printer/scanner

Postby aldQueiroz » Oct 18th, '11, 18:58

Hello everybody.
As a try, I've installed Mageia in my notebook (CPU Centrino), a model of 2006, after a previous Mandriva 2010 installation which, for some reason stopped to recognize the built-in wi-fi card. Mageia installation ran smoothly, and the wif-fi card works, no problem.
But after a few months, prime Notes user (my wife) asks if I have set up our printer (a MFP Samsung CLX-3170) to print through our domestic net from the Notebook too ... No, I haven't. But I answered I would do it, having in mind Mageia Config Central, following the example of Mandriva, is very intuitive. Ok, go to 'Central', then 'hardware', 'printer', and select to install a network printer ... and nothing! The Notebook keeps searching a printer connected to the net for a whole life, but it finds no one. In that screen there's a option to enter 'URI' of the device. I have set a fixed IP for each device on my network, but this address does not appear to serve as URI.
How do I do? And extending the topic, how do I set up the scanner on the network as well (is a multifunctional; Samsung also has a Linux driver for your specific model - a rare thing when dealing with major manufacturers!)
I wait for suggestions / guidance.

Thanks to all.

I dont know about your specific printer, as I have a Brother device printing through wlan.

You must read the instructions from Samsung and download/install the driver. Ususally, you download some rpm's and install them by double clicking. After install you configure your printer in Mageia control panel Hardware->printers. Right click your printer, choose properties. On the URI property set it to "socket://10.0.0.5:9100" or what the ip address is to your printer.

Found out you need this driver:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downl ... 3175FW/XAA

Download, and unpack, you get a folder cdroot.

You must install cups, sane and ghostscript before the Samsung printer driver

Open a terminal window, change directory to the install.sh file:
cd Downloads/cdroot/linux

run install as root (sh ./install.sh)

Tell if you make any progress or if something is unclear. :)

Thank you again, my friend!
Surely, I'll do it as soon as I get my hands on the Notebook (have to struggle with my 15 years old kid ! ;) ) and free time with no complaims of my wife (the worst part!! )!
And, of course, I'll report the progress of all these 'enchants! :)

Yes Samsung gives you nice instructions for installing their Unified Driver on Linux. :D

The problems are that that they no longer have the driver download on their site and when you find the latest version on the web it doesn't work properly on Mageia.

See my topic here on how I got my CLP300 working but I have no idea if that will work with a multifunction printer/scanner.

Bottom line is that unless Samsung cleans up it's act I'll be shopping elsewhere for my needs.

Yes, but the package I mentioned includes the file "./Linux/noarch/at_opt/share/ppd/CLX-3170splc.ppd" - if it was my printer I would have tried this first.

Ok. I've got downloaded that package before, to use it with my other machines (including my own desktop, with Ubuntu... 11.10... which is troubled, btw... :? ); in case I find no longer the driver on Samsung site, I can pick it up from the other computer (once I've got it on-line again! :| )
Once again, thank you very much for your attention and interest, trul!:)
Another thing: where can I make suggestions and/or report some little 'annoying things' (not exactly bugs) about how Mageia is running?

Warm regards!

Best bet is here in the forums, where it can be discussed first. Just create a new thread for this in the "Basic Support" subforum.
