Mageia 1 (KDE) is locking up (other than mouse) fairly often

Postby DiBosco » Oct 18th, '11, 12:15

I have been running Mageia 1 for a couple of weeks or so on both desktop and laptop and am happy with its speed, looks etc. However, on my desktop I am havinga real problem where the system just stops responding other than the mouse still moving around the screen. Everything else dies. I've had a shell open with top running and can't see anything that particularly is hogging the resources.

This has happened twice today and both times I've had to hit the reset switch. A couple of times this has happened I've been able to do CTL -ALT-Backspace and recover relatively gracefully.

dosbox and Firefox while running Adobe Flash videos on you tube are the two apps that seem to be running when this happens.

Can anyone suggest a away of tracking down what is going wring here please?

Thanks.

Could you please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -e flash -e nspluginwrapper | sort

Also please show the output of
Code: Select all
uname -a

You installed flash-plugin directly from Adobe? That's not the recommended way to install things,
you should always prefer distribution packages. We have flash-player-plugin packaged, maybe you
just need to enable non-free repositories (_release and _updates) then you'll remove your current flash-plugin
and install flash-player-plugin-11.0.1.152-1.mga1.nonfree which is also more up-to-date.

For further problems about Flashplayer, have a look in our MAQeia:

I did and always have installed directly from the Adobe site. I do not believe it is the flash plugin that is at fault as the system grinds to a halt with dosbox (and only dosbox) running. I was really pointing out that the two programs that seem to affect me are dosbox and flash videos. I wouldn't be surprised if other things affect it in future. When it locks up you can see the HDD light briefly blinking with a constant frequency.

As a matter of interest, with flash plugin being proprietary what difference could that actually make?

Automatic updates for security reasons (as flash player is a whole can-of-worms regarding security)
better integration into Mageia, automatic installation of all needed dependencies and installation at the right place, among others.

For the original problem, please show the output of
Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v
and tell what video driver you are using, which desktop environment and if you are using desktop effects or any other 3D desktop.

Are you by any chance using USB 3.0 devices when the lock-ups occur?

No, I don't have any USB 3 devices. I don't think it's a hardware issue as Mandriva didn't do this.

Compared to Mandriva Mageia kernel is quite more recent with many changes, this could be a possible reason.

Reading or writing on NTFS file systems during the lock-ups?

No NTFS, no.

Maybe I should try booting from the older kernel then?

If you didn't try that yet, sure.

I'm experimenting a similar problem on a notebook Acer Travelmate 8572TG with Nvidia GeForce GT330M and the proprietary Nvidia driver installed.
Randomly, expecially on boot, the system totally locks up (really, gets stuck, totally freezes). I must power off the computer to solve the problem.
No useful log messages.
Otherwise the system is working perfectly!

It happened again! :(
It happens randomly at the log in window (just after the Nvidia logo), when I'm hitting the o. k. button (after selecting user and password).
The system freezes completely (touchpad cursor included).
Could it be related to this?

[root@pc ~]# grep -i failed /var/log/prcsys.log
Starting system logger: [FAILED]
Retrigger failed udev events [ OK ]
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
Waiting for network to be up [FAILED]
Stopping boot logger [FAILED]

It does not occour with Fedora 15 or Windows 7 running on the same computer ... :|

I had a similar problem using Gnome's Network Manager in KDE. I could use the mouse, but I couldn't open anything except shutdown and logout. As long as I did not use Network Manager, there was no problem. I ended up uninstalling Network Manager and using kppp instead. Problem solved.

I think I have solved the dosbox problem with the script in one of the posts here:

The flash issue is probably just because Adobe make **** software and there's nowt we can do about it with it being proprietary.

Well, you could use any of the alternatives from the MAQeia for Flashplayer Plugin
