[SOLVED] Canon Printer LBP3100

Re: Canon Printer LBP3100

I was reading through the CUPS wiki at Arch Linux, do we have something to do with blacklisting the usblp module actually?

Ah, no it's actually the other way around, you need the usblp module and don't want to blacklist it.
Have you read http://translate.google.de/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mandrivauser.de%2Fdoku%2Fdoku.php%3Fid%3Dhardware%3Aperipherie%3Ahowto_canon as i suggested?
Did you create the udev rules file?

I'm still waiting for the answer : another clue : can I use the kernel from Fedora? Fedora seemed to accept Canon rather well

Answer for what exactly?
And about the kernel from Fedora: It's not only about the kernel, but also udev, hal, cups, the whole stack around it.
So even if you would get the Fedora kernel to run, it won't help you either.

Ping? I'd like to know about the status of this problem.

One new advice i have, too.
It hit me yesterday when setting up my parents Brother DCP-195C all-in-one device.
After installing the driver, it showed up in CUPS webinterface as "Ready, accepting jobs..."
but it didn't want to print.

Then i remembered since some time you need to switch the connection.
For this click Administration -> Change printer and there you can select a connection.
Is your printer listed under Local printers, maybe two times with different connections?

No, you go to the Printers tab, and over your printer you have two dropdown boxes, Maintenance and Administration.
At least that's what they're called in german, here, have a look:
cups-webadmin-screenshot.jpg
cups-webadmin-screenshot.jpg (256.3 KiB) Viewed 9021 times

The right dropdown box, there is an option to "Edit printer" or in german it would be "Change printer".
And there you can change the connection of the printer, description and such stuff.
If you don't find it, could you please open the right dropdown box and make a screenshot?

General Note about usblp module: In the german Mageia forum we have one member who also needed this for
an USB-parallel-port-adapter. He needed to compile his own kernel (which is really easy, believe me)
and now it's working for him. So you have a chance of getting that printer to work.

Re: Canon Printer LBP3100 / Brother DCP-195C

Postby madcowsonthewall » Sep 3rd, '11, 19:04

@doktor5000

Brother DCP-195C works fine, but you have to go after install indeed to:

http://localhost:631/printers

If you get a browser pop-up to login : User name = root , password is your root pasword

Click on the printer, check whether connection says usb://Brother/DCP-195C?serial=BROC1F119622 or usb://Brother/DCP-195C
Probably it says something completely different, so follow these steps:

Click on Administration > Modify printer

Go through all the steps, afterwards connection will show usb://Brother/DCP-195C

Now it should work!

Hello All,
After a period of absence I'm back ;-)
My Printer is still not working thought ;-()
I have followed a la lettre the instructions from Mandriva forum but nothing seems to happen
Doktor5000 was telling about changing the connection in Cups interface.
If we change this, what is the proper connection to put there? Is this ccp:/var/ccpd/fifo0
correct??
Maybe this is where I am stuck!
Thanks for the reply!

What connections does CUPS offer you?

Hello Doktor!
I have this printer which was automatically installed. The connections are as follows :
Current Connection: usb://Canon/LBP3100/LBP3108/LBP3150
Local Printers: SCSI Printer
PDF Writing
CAPT Printer
Canon LBP3100/LBP3108/LBP3150 (Canon LBP3100/LBP3108/LBP3150)
HP Printer (HPLIP)
HP Fax (HPLIP)

The printer which I installed with the Mandriva guide help has the following connection
Current Connection: ccp:/var/ccpd/fifo0
Local Printers: SCSI Printer
PDF Writing
CAPT Printer
HP Printer (HPLIP)
Canon LBP3100/LBP3108/LBP3150 (Canon LBP3100/LBP3108/LBP3150)
HP Fax (HPLIP)
Which one to use?
Thanks!!!

None of the currently installed two is printing, is that correct?
You should try out at least the CAPT driver. But from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CanonCaptDrv190#Configuring_CUPS
it seems "ccp:/var/ccpd/fifo0" should already be the correct connection method. Seems the canon printing daemon is not started yet.
What does
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/ccpd status

output when run as root?

/etc/init.d/ccpd status gives
/usr/sbin/ccpd: 3650 3003

As far as I know if you have 2 numbers it should be correct...

What I did is :
(i) delete the printer which Canon installed automatically when I connected the USB
(ii) changed the connections on CUPS as you had suggested.

I have been able to print off PDF files with Okular.
However, I just tried to print with Word 2007 (with Cross Over) - it does not work ;-(
Well at least i can just pdf all my printing documents and print with Okular

Still it is not very convincing - my best bet is to buy an HP printer!

The issue with Crossover may be a totally different building lot.

And if i'd not started maintaining hplip some time ago, i'd also prefer a HP printer
and recommend those. If you ask me now, i'd say buy a printer that natively
supports something like Postscript or PDF or something similar which does not
necessarily need special and proprietary vendor drivers.

Also my parents brother multi-function device (DCP-195C) is not automatically installed,
but easy to install and setup and works nicely.

Yes you are right!
The printer now works with KWrite etc, it is only with Wine/Crossover that it has got some problems.
Still I hope one day we come to the stage where canon are as easy to install as any HP!
