[SOLVED] Cinnamon inconvenience

Postby hosadeeb » Aug 1st, '25, 07:03

Hi there,
I recently went on to try Cinnamon, and I do really like it a lot. Still, I found something a bit inconvenient: When the Mageia Update displays a notification icon, I should be allowed to click on it and a dialogue box should appear to accept my password, right? Well, this never happens. This is also true about the MCC icon.

Of course, it's no big deal to go to the console and invoke mcc. Still, it would have been nice to have the above facility available.

Something else: When I try to log into an online account of mine, the dialogue box that appears, though it takes a moment to load its contents, it really doesn't show anything! So, I'm not able to complete the login procedure. I then have to resort to using a browser.

Thanks a whole lot!

That usually happens when there's no polkit agent available to show you the authentication dialog or when it times our or similar. What polkit agent do you currently use?
Code: Select all
ps -ef|grep -v grep|grep -iE "polkit|policykit"

Otherwise journalctl excerpts from the time where you try to run MCC or the update tool to see what happens at that time.

That's what I get from the above code:
Code: Select all
polkitd      999       1  0 07:44 ?        00:00:01 /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd --no-debug

That's what I mentioned, there's no polkit agent running, only the polkit daemon itself.
/usr/libexec/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 should be started via /usr/share/applications/polkit-cinnamon-authentication-agent-1.desktop although I can't check on a Mageia box currently.

Well, I see a problem here...

In my /usr/libexec/ directory I could only find polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 polkit-mate-authentication-agent-1, not the one you mentioned. I went to MCC, and searched for it on the repositories, nothing to be found!

Any ideas?

Yeah there is not one for every single desktop environment, but there should be one for GNOME that is used by default, although I can't check currently.
Although you can try with either of the ones you have, both should work although the Mate one might look better for Cinnamon.

OK, I did find polkit-cinnamon-authentication-agent-1 in /usr/share/applications, actually two files, and one of them does use the mate agent you mentioned. On manually executing it, invoking MCC from the apps menu does display the desired dialogue box.

Thanks a lot!
