Chromium

Postby morgano » Jun 20th, '23, 17:17

Heads up to Google Chromium-browser users.

We have on Mageia 8 not been able to update our Mageia 8 chromium-browser package it since March.
So for security reasons, we suggest you shift to use another application for browsing the internet.

If you want Chromium, consider installing it by using Flatpak.
Of course we have Firefox - the ESR version. If you want the current non ESR version see Flatpak for that too.
We have instructions for installing Google Chrome.
And we also have a bunch more internet browsers packaged, like Falkon, Midori, ...

EDIT:

1) Regarding switching, also Firefox on Mageia 8 have not been able to get updated for long - Same workaround there: Upgrade to Mageia 9, or install from upstream or as Flatpak.

2) This is old:
" You could also upgrade to Mageia 9 if you want to be an early adopter/tester
Lots of us are using it already but be warned it is not finished yet.
"

/EDIT

In Mageia 9, Chromium is in tainted due to patent issues.
Not granted we will keep it, we will see.
For more information see the bug.

Thanks Morgano for all your support to communicate wisely on this topic.

To summarize the situation: the Chromium team is complicating (over-complicating if you ask me) the build and the packaging of Chromiun by using bleeding edge version of LLVM.
Our LLVM version in MGA8 is now too old and makes too heavy the work to patch it to be able to keep providing Chromium.

It still works with MGA9 and as long as other distributions like openSUSE and Fedora will share the burden to find patches to allow building with LLVM 15, I will keep pushing Chromium package into our MGA9 Tainted repo.

See you around and keep enjoying Mageia.
(side note: MGA9 is already a good option if don’t have very specific needs and you are ready to do a fresh install).

Hi there, thanks for the heads-up. I've moved this into the news and announcements subforum and marked it as an announcement to try to improve visibility.

No! Mageia 9 ships chromium-browser-118.0.5993.117-1.mga9.tainted.x86_64.rpm as of Nov 14, 2023.

But still dangerously outdated as upstream is at 119.0.6045.123 already.

See my first post about two methods to possibly get newer versions from outside Mageia.

Tainted doesn't works for me. Died with error:
/usr/bin/chromium-browser: symbol lookup error: /usr/bin/chromium-browser: undefined symbol: av_stream_get_first_dts, version LIBAVFORMAT_59

The only one witch works almost fine is "UngoogledChromium" from flatpak. The regressive politics against cookies makes it non-useful for me and frequently logged-out from websites.

I hope some day to use Chromium as is, because the PWA support is missing from Firefox

About this hour 119.0.6045.159 is landing in tainted updates.
And everything will move faster and smother the more people help - this is a community driven distro.

Tainted doesn't works for me. Died with error:

/usr/bin/chromium-browser: symbol lookup error: /usr/bin/chromium-browser: undefined symbol: av_stream_get_first_dts, version LIBAVFORMAT_59

Did you also try normal Chromium from Flatpak or Google?

You know you in Flatpak may adjust sandboxing if you want?
