Moved to Mageia at last

Postby janpihlgren » Sep 28th, '11, 15:49

Hi
At last I have moved from Mandriva tio Mageia. :D
The move was not easy. The upgrade from Mandrive 2010.2 failed. 163 packages faild to be insstalled.
But what was the worst thing was that kdm coudn't start becas of , what it say, wrong setup. After a couple av tries I stop trying.
I did a "clean" install and 'voila' , up and running :D . Then I had to reinstal a couple of programs.

My conclusion after this and previus upgradings (of Mandriva) is that upgrading is something that often fails.
Well now this is historical.

I hope that Mageia will continue to develop in the same direction as old Mandriva.

So here I am, a happy Mageia-user. :D

My equipment is a Lenovo ThinkPad W701 with 8GB memory, Nvidia GForce FX2800 graphic, 320GB + 500GB hd and 2TB external hd

Nice to have you onboard :)

It would have been helpful if you would have posted the packages which failed to be installed,
or missing dependencies so that we could fix those upgrade problems ...

I also recently upgraded from Mandriva 2010.2 to Mageia. I couldn't do it booting to the .iso. I received the error "output in file /mnt/etc/hosts failed: Permission denied" when I tried. I went to this page http://www.mageia.org/en/1/migrate/ and entered the command lines as shown near the bottom. Near the end of the installation, I received a dependency error, and the entire process bombed.

The machine that I was upgrading was an Oracle Virtualbox machine, so I restored the .vdi file and started again. The package that had the dependency error had something to do with printing, so I just removed it. I wound up with three more dependency problems. I was able to install the missing package twice and had to delete one more package. I don't remember what any of them were.

Once I did this, I was able to successfully upgrade to Mageia, but without a GUI. That's when I posted this message to the basic support forum.
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1063. I am kind of disappointed that it didn't get any replies in case I have any problems down the line. The lack of a GUI turned out of be easy to solve. When I looked through the logs, I saw an error about no valid displays (or something along those lines). I renamed the xorg.conf file and re-install Virtualbox Guest Additions... problem solved.

I've been running Mageia since September 12 and love it.

I'm sorry, but at the installation I get a messagelist that tell me which files that failed. But I don't saved that list .
If I has succeeded to launch kdm I ,maybe, could has to send the list.
But I'm sorry it's to late.
At the end, as I'm working with Mageia I'm happy. :D
My intention for this topic was to tell that I'm a Mageian user.
