[SOLVED] Crashed Firefox+Chrome+Opera

Postby Linares » Jun 13th, '21, 14:45

[ENG]

Hello.

In Mageia 7, I normally work with the Firefox, Chrome and Opera browsers. But a few days ago I updated Firefox and, all of a sudden, all three browsers have stopped working.

Whatever website I intend to visit (including this Mageia forum) I get those notices that the page is not secure.

How can I solve that?

PS: I can't update to Mageia 8 because my hard drive is almost full and, if it fills up in the middle of the update, I would lose the entire Mageia system.

[ESP]

Hola.

Can you please show the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep -iE "firefox|nss|nspr|rootcerts"|sort

Well, you could clean up your / partition or maybe /var if that's a separate filesystem, or download the packages to different directory/filesystem where you have more space.
And you won't lose the entire Mageia system just because the upgrade gets stuck.

how *full* is your / partition?

The upgrade will advise approximately how much data will be downloaded to complete the upgrade, so you should have this as free space. for me it was about 4GB.
how many kernels do you have? maybe you could remove the excess ones before upgrade, and maybe also the three browsers (they each take up a bit of space, as does, if you have it, Libre-Office, and any other big ticket items - see Appimages etc.) make a note of that which you remove so you can re-install them after upgrade completes.

As mga7 sooon will not receive more updatres, you should upgrade.
As benmc say you can uninstall a bunch of things, and later reinstall.
Also see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Removing_packages
Maybe remove some logs, old temp files, and other debris lingering?
If you have user files in same partition move them to some other place temporarily.
What is the output of df ?
To minimise space needed for upgrade download packages, use the method to boot on installer ISO, select to upgrade, and enable online repos so it can get additiomnal packages and updates from internet while upgrading, what is not in ISO.

You seem to have done some strange selective update, you're missing at least current rootcerts and also part of the nss package updates. The former one is why you're seeing those certificate errors, as your installed package is from 2019.

Have a look at the packages that belong to the recent firefox update, and redo the update: http://advisories.mageia.org/MGASA-2021-0236.html

Would be helpful if you could post the output of
Code: Select all

You should disable the following repos: Core Updates Debug, Core Updates Testing

See our wiki. https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Enabling_the_Testing_media#Enable_them_the_easy_way and also https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Install_media_in_Mageia_for_beginners
To disable the testing and debug medias do the following:

- Open a terminal or console
- Get root:
Code: Select all
su -
(Type your root password when asked)

- Type into console
Code: Select all
drakrpm-edit-media --expert
(The media window shown in the wiki pops up)

- uncheck both medias Core Updates Debug (distrib4), Core Updates Testing (distrib5)
- click ok and close the media window

- and finaly type into the console:
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update --auto --force

- let the all packages install if there are any. Please post here the console output of this command.

You can also directly disable them as root via
Code: Select all
urpmi.update --ignore "Core Updates Debug" "Core Updates Testing"

And it would probably be a good idea to check which packages you have installed from those repositories, as you would need to downgrade those.
Code: Select all
urpmq --not-available
would show all packages which are currently installed, which are not available from currently configured repositories.
Usually that list should be basically empty.

Hello.
I don't know what exactly happened. But, after following the indications of doktor5000 and sturmvogel, I have restarted the computer, for several minutes a message of "Creating graphics drivers" has appeared and, when I thought that the computer was frozen, Mageia has restarted and the three browsers returned to function properly. In fact, I write this from Firefox.
So it has not been clear to me what the problem was, or what the solution was, but it is already fixed. Thank you very much to all.

Make sure the message about creating graphics drivers do not happen every boot, then please mark this subject solved by adding "[SOLVED]" as first part of subject in your first post above.

Anyway great problems seemed solved, but how to explain that urpmq --not-available should basically be empty, but is far from empty when Linares runs the command.

Well, some of those are 3rd party packages, and they are not available from any configured repo currently, e.g. skypeforlinux and google-chrome-stable. chrome comes via google repositories, but those only present the latest package version. Also the google repo does not seem to be present now.
The other packages are either mga7 leftovers or were installed from the debug and testing repos that should now be disabled. Or they are from 32bit repos which are not enabled now.

If you go through the list one by one, you'll notice that those packages are not present in mga8 repos, or only with a higher version number.
So OP still seems to be missing some updates...

That "creating graphic drivers" message only appeared on subsequent reboot, in none of the following, thankfully. So I have already marked this post as "solved". Thank you very much to all.
