Solved: PCI-Express card for sata with sii3132 chipset

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Solved: PCI-Express card for sata with sii3132 chipset

Postby hviaene » Jun 4th, '21, 10:22

I inserted such card because I need an extra sata port for my DVD writer.
The card is recognized by Bios (Asus motherboard), and when Mageia 8 is running, I see in MCC - Hardware the card with the module sata-sil24. Same I get of course with lspci and lsmod commands.
But the attached DVD-writer is nowhere seen. It has power and I can insert a DVD, but no joy.
Googling seems to indicate that this module is the right one for this card, so what I am missing????

Can you please add the output of lspcidrake -v ?

Anything in journal logs for the card or drive detection on that card ? I'm not sure what to search for, your could try with
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab|grep -iE "sata|_sil24|silicon|1095|3132"
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

To make sure you know about the configuration: this desktop has 4 HD's, the motherboard has 6 SATA ports, but 5 and 6 are disabled because of the presence of an nvme SSD.

More info:
This card came with a DVD with drivers and utilities. And yes, also for Fedora, Redhat, Suse e.a.
But it comes down to install a module sii3132, but this info is quite old, since it refers to kernel 2.6.19. The final step is to do the commands:
insmod scsi_ mod (does that still exists???, it gives module not found)
insmod sii3132.ko
But that last one returns invalid format.

I'm not sure whether that kernel module would still be compatible ...

Apart from that, that card should be working in general, have a look at https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id ... -1095-7132
Maybe your card is still configured for RAID mode, as it comes with 3 different possible firmware versions - maybe check what configuration your card runs, and if there's a firmware upgrade available.

Otherwise, check a different PCI-x slot, check the SATA cables and the power connection to the DVD drive.

First to your last suggestion: I did all that before I went back to the shop as I found no solution. They tested the card as a RAID configuration and confirmef me they used it to transfer 1TB of data, so the card itself should be OK.
Now, your suggestion that it might still be confirmed as RAID is thus true AFAICS, and your suggestion on firmware versions might be the answer, but this is way off my level of knowledge.
BUT: trying to find out about the module I did:
# rpm -q --whatprovides sata_sil24
no package provides sata_sil24
So what did I do wrong here, and what is the firmware package for this card??

If you want to find out more about the module, as root use
Code: Select all
modinfo sata_sil24

rpm -q --whatprovides can only be used to query rpm provides.

For the firmware version, from what I read the vendors only offer firmware upgrade tools that run mostly under windows.
See e.g. bullet 2. at http://stupidstuffihadtofix.blogspot.co ... h-cfi.html which mentions this briefly.
You don't want it to be running in RAID mode, it needs to be running in JBOD (just a bunch of disks) mode. Either you can do that in the BIOS for the card itself,
as mostly such adapters have a small settings tool separat from the BIOS/UEFI of your box - if I'm correct you should be able to open that via F4 during boot.
Or you need to flash a different firmware - maybe the different original firmware are also on the CD that came with the card.

Have a look at e.g. http://www.ioi.com.tw/products/proddeta ... ID=1060063 for the different firmwares,
they also offer a DOS update tool which you could add onto a FreeDOS boot media.

After swapping cables and ports and devices once more, it turned out that the sata connector on the DVDwriter device was broken (literally). A new DVDwriter solved everything.
Tx for your effort in this.
