What Mageia release do you use, and what desktop environment ? Also, please post the output of the following commands, run as your regular user

Code: Select all
LC_ALL=C systemctl --user status pulseaudio.socket pulseaudio.service -al
LC_ALL=C getfacl /dev/snd/*
LC_ALL=C pacmd ls

Re: lost sound, now have dummy output

Postby doktor5000 » Feb 16th, '20, 16:27

Seems something is blocking access of pulseaudio to your actual soundcard. Can you please post the output as root of
Code: Select all
fuser -v /dev/snd/*

You can also try to start pulseaudio manually (as your regular user) to see whether it provides any hints why it cannot access the soundcard.
Code: Select all
pulseaudio -vvv

Although for that you'd have to kill pulseaudio and also disable autospawning of the user service.

Does this issue also exist for a freshly created user ?

To disable autospawn, have a look at e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu ... dio_server

Please also post the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i codec /proc/asound/card*/codec*
lspcidrake -v

Could you add some context information on how your speakers are connected, e.g. to your mainboard audio or to your graphics card, and how (3.5mm jack, HDMI, ... ?)

Also, if you boot an older kernel, do you still only have dummy output ?

speakers are USB powered 2.1 plugging into 3.5 sound jack at rear of computer - onboard sound
headphones also not working plugging into 3.5 socket front of computer
both speakers and headphones are working otherwise

current kernel 5.4.17
booted into 5.4.12 and 5.4.10, still no sound, dummy output

I am wondering if the sound chip on the motherboard has failed ?

Well, can't really tell. Do you have any other operating system or live CD for testing ?

tried Knoppix
played some games, tried playing yootoobs

NO Sound

I guess that would indicate a hardware fault ....

so time for an update
I ordered a cheap PCI-e sound-card from China on ebay
it arrived today and I quickly installed it
and lo and behold I now have sound
so most likely a hardware issue

I would like to thank Doktor5000 for your patience and help
