Tips on icons - Mageia 1 desktop with KDE 4.6.5, screenshots

Postby macxi » Sep 5th, '11, 14:52

Hi,

I made images of customized desktop of the Mageia 1, with KDE 4.6.5, and with some explanations of various icons on the bottom panel.
Are just some explanations that may be useful for beginners.

Note 01: The KDiskFree icon depends of the KDF package installation in the Software Manager-MCC (or text mode) and then click the menu icon "KDiskFree - Utility removable media"

Note 02: The icon Firestarter-Firewall depends on the Firestarter package installation has not yet in Mageia is still the bundled Mandriva 2010.2 and requires root password to load. It is a firewall that can be considered redundant because already have the firewall's native Mageia, which is the shorewall (which is the same for Mandriva) and has to be enabled in the Mageia Control Center-MCC, in "Security Tab", and "Configure Firewall".

Note 03: The images were edited with INKSCAPE 0.48, and theGimp 2.6, in MAGEIA 1. Anyone who wants to edit the file in Inkscape, doing different tips with different wallpaper, etc., just download the SVG file here and here. If needed, has some tips on the topic: InkScape 0.48 - Create and edit images and vector drawings (in pt-Br: INKSCAPE 0.48 - Criar e editar imagens e desenhos vetoriais.

Note 04: The software of the icons on the desktop can be installed easily by the "Software Manager" in MCC and several software can be found in a list in Linux Application table for MAGEIA 1.

Cheers :)

Thanks macxi,

When you say Style Gtk+, do you mean Gnome like ?
This post sounds like the definitive Wiki were lacking... ;)

Lebarhon,

No, this is KDE configuration (version 4.6.5). And that can be configured in Systema Settings Image, in "Application Appearance", Tab "style", and "style widgets": GTK+. See in the tip of Ahmad in topic: Re: Question on Tainted Repo/Branch.

The "desktop appearance", that can be configured in "Desktop Theme", is AIR.

Cheers :)

Yes. GTK+ is the Gimp ToolKit, a Graphics library, which GNOME is based on ;)

Doktor5000,
I think I didn't understand correctly the question of Lebarhon.
Thanks for the explanation. :)

So, just adding: Wikipedia --> GTK+:
    * GNOME is based on GTK+, meaning that programs native to GNOME use GTK+
    * KDE, though based on Qt, has integration with GTK+-based programs and themes (since version 4.2).

Lebarhon,

I hope the permanent Magea Wiki is created soon and I hope the wiki has space to create simple tips, basic for beginners.
I made a text in MageiaBrasil Forum, commenting that I think is important to create tips for beginners, to expand Mageia users:

--> Automatic translation google language tool: Why to edit tips for beginners here in the Mageia Forum and Mageia Wiki?
--> (in portuguese:Porquê editar dicas p/ iniciantes aq e no Wiki MageiaBrasil?)

Cheers! :)
Macxi

Note: The MageiaBrazil Wiki continues to be edited:
First page (in portuguese) and Mageia 1 download page (in portuguese).
