[SOLVED] Network connection suddenly interrupted

[SOLVED] Network connection suddenly interrupted

Postby magchris » Jul 22nd, '18, 18:40

For some days I encounter the problem that the wlan connection suddenly is interrupted.
The icon in the status bar shows that there is an established connection but if I try to ping my router I get an error: „Destination Host unreachable.“ In this case, also navigation in nemo slows down a lot.
After shut down and reboot of the system the connection works again until it is interrupted again some time later.
I'm am using Mageia 6 64 bit. Kernel: 4.14.50-desktop-2.mga6

Does anyone have an idea what could be the reason. Other systems of my LAN (which doesn't have Mageia installed) haven't this problem.

Have you checked the journal for errors?
You could try booting on elder kernel.
You can also try latest kernel, https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23315, also bug 32214, 23313
Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011 at home & work. Thinkpad T40, T43, T400, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox, BOINC

Please provide the output of the following commands:

Code: Select all
lspcidrake -v | grep -iE "wlan|wifi|wireless|net"
ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep -iE "net|wpa"

and, as root:
Code: Select all
ifconfig -a
rfkill list all
systemctl status network.service -al
journalctl -ab | grep -iE "fw|firmware|iwl|wifi|wire|80211"
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

Re: Network connection suddenly interrupted

Postby doktor5000 » Jul 29th, '18, 20:27

For the systemctl status network.service -al some lines are cut off on the right side ...

You may want to try some of the module options, like disabling power management as mentioned in https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2339439

Although on newer kernels there are quite a lot of similar reports:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1585412
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1562578
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1236495

Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Re: Network connection suddenly interrupted

Postby wintpe » Jul 30th, '18, 11:00

I posted a similar issue after running powertop, it set into place suspending usb and i found my usb mouse and keyboard just dropping off occupationally.

i wrote a systemctl start script to re-enable the ports overriding the powertop behaviour.

then found powertop installs a systemctl start script itself to keep reapplying the profile

have you installed powertop, this may be behind the issue.

I found this post:
http://www.remotebits.com/index.php/201 ... in-ubuntu/

I turned off power management for the wifi adapter by
Code: Select all
sudo iwconfig wlp2s0 power off

and now will see whether it solves the problem.

Unfortunately "sudo iwconfig wlp2s0 power off" doesn't solve the problem. The wifi connection was interrupted again.

Did you try already as suggested earlier?

interpreting some of doktors hints

i didnt have my mageia handy, so on a redhat system

Code: Select all
modinfo iwlwifi|grep power_save
parm:           power_save:enable WiFi power management (default: disable) (bool)

what does yours say.

if it does not say disabled them use

Code: Select all
modprobe  iwlwifi power_save=disable

to make it permanent add a file called disable_wifi_power_mamangment or similar (name not important)

with

Code: Select all
options iwlwifi power_save=disable

in /etc/modprobe.d

Here he output of my system
Code: Select all
$ modinfo iwlwifi|grep power_save
parm:           power_save:enable WiFi power management (default: disable) (bool)

Now I did also
Code: Select all
# sudo -i
# echo "options iwlwifi power_save=0"  >>  /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

which was proposed in the post which doktor5000 mentioned above
I'm not sure whether there is a difference to the existing configuration

I am having a similar issue. The wifi drops out at random times. The power management appears to be off.

Code: Select all
# iwconfig
lo        no wireless extensions.

wlp0s29f7u4  IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"FiOS-V51TW"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Access Point: 48:5D:36:F7:5F:7C
          Bit Rate=72.2 Mb/s   Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=65/70  Signal level=-45 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:134   Missed beacon:0

enp4s1    no wireless extensions.

enp2s0    no wireless extensions.

Code: Select all
# modinfo iwlwifi|grep power_save
parm:           power_save:enable WiFi power management (default: disable) (bool)

When I monitor the wifi, it reports some minimal traffic up and down, but when I try to use it in a browser, it reports that there is no internet.

Sometimes it runs all day and sometimes it fails in just a few minutes.

In fact, it just failed while I was trying to post this.

I can usually restore the connection by opening the network manager, disconnecting from the wifi and reconnecting.

as a process of elimination, if you have a android phone or one that allows turning it into a access point/bridge

could you instead of connecting to your broadband connect to your phone and see if its any more stable.

im just trying to see if the settings the driver is now applying (firmware, driver, hardware combination)

is not playing ball with your router.

also in case its a common problem both of you what router/isp are you using

The ISP is Verizon FIOS, the router is the new FIOS Quantum Gateway. We were just updated a few months ago. I think that we had the same problem before the upgrade, but I may be mistaken in that. My memory is not clear on when I first noticed the issue.

We have seen no Wifi issues with any other devices including a Samsung Smart TV, two HP wireless printers, a Mint desktop computer, a Windows laptop computer and four Samsung smart phones. It is just the Mageia 6 computer in the basement. The signal down there is not the strongest, so that may be an issue. I don't know. It is not terribly weak either, as you can see in my previously posted information. When it is working, and I ping the web, it always shows no lost packets.

My phone is not set up to be used as an access point, and I am not sure how I would do that.

BTW, the wifi adapter has the Atheros chip. I don't have the driver details etc because I am typing this on another computer. Here is the adapter information

Code: Select all
ALFA Network AWUS036NHA Atheros AR9271 2000mW 802.11b/g/n Wireless-N USB WLAN Adapter with 5dBi Antenna

This is not a show-stopper problem for me because the Mageia 6 computer is a backup system, and my main computer is always hard wired into the router switch. After I boot the Mageia system I will gather more information and see if I can help trouble shoot this problem. From the chatter in the links posted on this thread, it appears to be a cross-distro problem as well.

My router is a Speedport manufactured by Arcadyan with newest firmware installed.

Re: Network connection suddenly interrupted

I'm futher struggeling with this issue.

Now I found out following:
At the same time when the network connection is interrupted I get the message "ping: sendmsg: no buffer space available."
When I try to ping the router later on, I get the message "destination host unrechable"

I guess this is the reason of all my trouble.

While searching how to increase the buffer space I found this article which is very old (2009)
https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-tcp-tuning/

Does anybody know whether it would be valid also for an actual mageia installation or wat I have to do to increase the buffer size of my mageia system.

Thanks in advance

Those are basic kernel tunables, and no matter if they are old or not, they still apply to the kernel no matter what distro ...

Although in your case I'd say changing those tunables might not solve the actual issue, which might be a hardware/driver problem, or the combination of your wireless chipset and your wireless router.

I'd say try a different wireless adapter to check whether it also happens with that one.

Here an update.
Finally I could solve the problem by using an external usb wifi adapter instead of the internal wifi adapter.
The first adapter which I tried had a very poor performance under linux (< 1 MBit/s)

The adapter which I use now is an ALLNET ALL0233DB which has a Ralink RT5572 chipset.
The connection is stable. I hadn't any interruptions for more than 3 weeks and the performance is quite god when I use the 2,4 GHz band.
