[SOLVED] Mageia 6 Installation Griefs

Postby hosadeeb » Jul 27th, '18, 18:37

Hi my fellow Mageia users,
In the following I'm relating what happened to me, with no great expectations for answers or solutions, though I'd be delighted if there are any.

It seems I've been lying under a huge rock for the past year or so, because I never heard of a Mageia 6 release... That is, until a couple of days ago when I received an alert stating that Mageia 5 support will halt, and that I should better upgrade.

Now, I totally forgot that my Mageia 5 upgrade was done in-place. So, I just proceeded with the offered option of just upgrading in-place. And the griefs started...

  • After more than two days of downloads, I got an error message "Failure to add medium", with no mention of which specifically.
  • After trying to manually update all that is possible to update, Mageia Control Centre remains lacking the tab for installing/uninstalling RPM's and related stuff!!!! This is even lacking in the Desktop menus!!!
  • Let alone that some libraries are now broken for no obvious reason, or declared Not Found though they are (e.g., libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 which stops SeaMonkey, for example, from launching).

I'm not complaining, and my sole purpose of relating this to you is that someone, somewhere, might draw conclusions, or a piece of code might end up getting an overhaul.

Thank you all for bearing with me.

What do you mean in particular after more than two days of downloads? Are you talking about downloads of installation media, and then this error during installation or when?
You also don't mention which method you used to upgrade from https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_6_Rel ... m_Mageia_5

hosadeeb wrote:After trying to manually update all that is possible to update, Mageia Control Centre remains lacking the tab for installing/uninstalling RPM's and related stuff!!!! This is even lacking in the Desktop menus!!!

What installation media did you use?
And are you talking about the software management tab - http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/6/en/content/ ... ement.html ?

What do you mean by broken, and "now" in what context? And you should probably at least post some specific error message.

Sorry to say, but if you don't create bugreports for reproducible issues so one of the developers can take a look, nothing will get an "overhaul".
Your report is pretty unspecific, there's nothing to fix from a distro point of view just from your feedback.

Exactly that, i.e. after all installation media got downloaded and installed.

You also don't mention which method you used to upgrade from https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_6_Rel ... m_Mageia_5

I was offered an online upgrade, and I just clicked OK.

The system simply went on to "Distribution Upgrade". By that time, I had not done anything but click the OK button.

And are you talking about the software management tab - http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/6/en/content/ ... ement.html ?

Exactly that.

"Now" means after the upgrade was done. "Broken" meant that, for example, a library that exists on the system is not found by the software.

Do you have a slow or unreliable internet connection? Because two days is an excessively long time.

If your internet connection is good, it may be that a bad mirror was selected for the upgrade. What is the output from typing
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-url

in a terminal?

There were more than 5530 packages to upgrade. My connection is quite stable, as a matter of fact, of about 112 KB/sec in average.

The output of the "urpmq --list-url" command is:

OK, not a fast connection (although two days still seems a bit long).

What is the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep mga5 | wc

and
Code: Select all
uname -a

The first command yields:
400 400 12997

And the second:
Linux bedroom 4.14.56-desktop-1.mga6 #1 SMP Mon Jul 16 19:36:06 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

One other thing,

I finally remembered that there was a package called "rpmdrake" (I've been using Mageia since its beginning, and Mandiva, and Mandrake before them). I checked and found it was not installed. So, I installed it, and now the MCC has its Software Management tab, as well as the desktop menu option. Thank God!!!!

The only main problem that remains is the error message: "error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". This happens whenever I try to launch Adobe Reader, SeaMonkey and gdlinux (those are the ones I checked so far).

I believe Adobe Reader is only available as a 32-bit package. Are you using the 32-bit version of SeaMonkey as well?
Check you have the libgtk+-x11-2.0_0 package installed as well as the lib64gtk+-x11-2.0_0 package.

I believe everything has been put to order now!!!

Once I had access to rpmdrake I found out that the problem (which I had never noticed under Mageia 5) was that the library in question was the 64-bit version, while all the software concerned are 32-bit. I did the necessary installation, and they all work like before.

Ouffffff, now I don't have to re-install from scratch any more!!!

Thank you very much for bearing with me!!!
