First alpha?

Postby hansmicheelsen » Mar 17th, '18, 13:27

May I please very humbly ask when the first alpha of Mga 7 will appear?

Sorry for seeming impatient, but I'm a very eager Mageia user and it always makes me so happy when new Mga is released

There is a pretty big update soon coming to Mageia 6: Plasma 5.12, QT5, KF5, and related.
After that there will probably be released a respin of Mageia 6 install medias with all updates since release; Mageia 6.1
Note that everything in 6.1 will be coming through normal updates to existing Mageia 6 installs.
Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011 at home & work. Thinkpad T40, T43, T400, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox, BOINC

It actually do not tell us anything. ;)

Mageia 6 was under development for 2 years, and after nearly 9 month with Mageia 6, we haven't seen anything from the development of Mageia 7. Has something gone wrong somewhere?

You can see development at Mageia App Database, and also there are updates to Cauldron every day:

Thanks, will Mageia 7 be ready this summer?

If I remember it right, I think Mageia was supposed to have a release cycle on 9 or 12 month. But anything can go wrong, and every plan can run in some difficulties and will have to be changed, than mayby there is a new release cycle I have overlooked.

No, it's 18 months. Check https://www.mageia.org/en/support/#lifecycle

if you are all so eager about the next Mageia release, then feel free to sign up for the qa-discuss mailing list and register yourself as QA tester, see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Pre-release_ ... ticipating

please do.

also have a look here => https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Cauldron
if you have space you can create a new instance of Mga6, (just a single partition large enough to contain it, ~10Gb seems enough for all desktop install), change the mirrors to "cauldron", update, and you are running cauldron.

for me it has been very stable, so it will give you an idea as to how far away Mga7 alpha / snapshot-1 is.

Note (#1): do not use as your primary or mission critical system!
Note (#2): see note (#1)

You don't answer my questions, I'll try again :)

Isn't there an difference between release cycle and lifecycle?
I found this here http://blog.mageia.org/en/2011/07/17/ma ... -planning/
Has that changed?

Will Mageia 7 be released this summer?

Hi orts.

sorry for the confusion.

there have been a few "hiccups" with regard to Mga5/6 these last few months: spectre and meltdown.
effort has been placed in mitigating these issues for users.
I support the decision to look after existing users and maintain the security of running systems.
When meltdown and spectre are "attended to", there is also an enormous update concerning Kde Application Stack bug 22660, (plasma5) KF5 stack bug 22658, and qt5 stack bug 22657.
when these items are deemed stable by QA they will be released.
Due to the size of these updates, which need to be run as a single update by the user, there is also work to be done also synchronising the mirrors before release, as a partial update of these packages will cause the users system to become unusable.
then, once this update is released, a new .iso for Mga6 that includes all updates will be put through QA , and when ready, released.
then work can start on creating Mga7!

so, due to external factors, Mageia 7 release is delayed.

The release plan is beginning to take shape: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_7_Development.
First Beta due around this week (25/11). Final release in januar if things goes well.
Is there a public announcement on the way?

I understand that new .isos for Mga7 are "in" QA testing.

When QA deem them stable enough for general release, there will indeed be a public announcement.
Be aware though that for Mga6, the first QA testing phase took many months before release.
The running joke was "who would release their next stable release first, Debian or Mageia!"

If you want to try your hand at the newest (latest from cauldron) .isos, put your name in the hat (so to speak) to aid testing.
After all this is a community effort, and you are part of the community. It is not an "us and them" set up.
Most of the testers are just ordinary users whom have a desire to improve Mageia to the best of their abilities.

Be aware that you will need to get "very well acquainted" with bugzilla - almost on a daily, if not hourly basis, installs can wreak havoc with boot loaders and destroy existing installs on a system by formatting completely a HDD.
If that hasn't put you off, and you feel you are up to the task, you have a spare partition (or two), you are welcome to join QA.

That being said, here is where you sign up => https://wiki.mageia.org/en/QA_ISO_testers

There was no alpha. And there is no such thing as in-house - everyone is welcome to participate in developing Mageia. If you'd like to help test ISOs before they are considered stable enough for general release, join the QA team!
