I love my newly installed Mageia 6! It Rocks!

I have a problem with my external hard drive though. I get the message "Unable to mount" in KDE.
Its the: Bus 001 Device 007: ID 04e8:61b6 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd M3 Portable Hard Drive 1TB

I have one of these drives, the 2 gig version, works fine. But as i dont use, and will never use later versions of windows i formatted it as ntfs

yours is formatted with extfat and as a result i think you might not have

fuse-exfat-1.2.6-1.mga6.tainted or later installed, which is required to mount it.

alternatively if your only using it in linux, repartition and format as a linux file system,
or as a ntfs old version file system, or vfat, so it works in windows XP as well.

the choice is yours and is about how portable you want it to be.

Yes, I will repartition it, Im done with Windows . What file system do you recomend?

I have a few files on the drive I want to keep though Maybe I can upload them to Nextcloud from a windows system, then format the drive and copy the files back. Would be much easyer if it would mount.

the choise is yours, its only 1TB so you can use vfat if you want, but ext4 also works well.

hint , dont use MCC

instead use CLI, as root

fdisk -l

identify the disk, and be 100% sure as this action will wipe your OS disk if you get it wrong.

fdisk /dev/sdX

X being the device that the usb disk has been identified as

p

will show you whats on the disk

d
select the old partition to delete

n
CR
CR
will accept defaults and put a label on it.

w will write the change out

partprobe will re-read the partition change.

mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdX1 -L MYDATADISK

or any suitable label.

when you are fininshed it should show up in dolphin, as MYDATADISK

click it and it will prompt for root password and then mount.

once mounted run

df -k

it will be mounted under /MEDIA/username/MYDATADISK i think from memory or something like that

then to make it writable

chmod 777 /media/username/MYDATADISK


thats how i do it.

its not the only way to do this, your mileage will vary according to what is simpler for you.

why do i not use mcc

because im a unix sysadmin/engineer and i dont use gui's unless absolutely necessary, its a poor practice
that leads you to being stuck when the gui is not available, as it is not in 99% of what i do.
