Problem with nvidia video drivers

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

Problem with nvidia video drivers

Postby chillar » Jan 29th, '17, 11:08

I have never had a problem with mageia regarding video drivers before. Generally after an update the drivers would take care of themselves, unlike previously (in other distros) where I had to re-install the proprietary drivers that were obtained from the nvidia official site.

After a recent update, however my system started hanging during the loading, the login screen never loaded up. I have managed to solve this problem by uninstalling all nvidia drivers, including the dkms and x11-driver-video-nvidia, and using nouveau instead. But I want to use the nvidia official driver that they provide through their site.

In the past, all I had to do was to execute their .run file when the display server is not running (in my case I do it by going into failsafe mode), and it did the rest of the job. However I am running into some problems while installing the nvidia driver through this way.

Code: Select all
ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'.  This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb, nvidiafb, or nouveau is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or no NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release.

I tried to uninstall nouveau to see if it works, but it doesn't. Is there anyway I can manage to install this driver instead of the one that gets installed through the repository?

You need to blacklist the nouveau driver to stop it from automatically loading, and also tell the initrd to not load nouveau as otherwise it will take care of the nvidia card and hence you get the above message. For some examples for a similar case check https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_5_Err ... d_graphics You could try with the following boot options:
Code: Select all
rdblacklist=nouveau xdriver=vesa

In any case, why do you want to use the upstream driver instead of using the one coming from the Mageia repositories?

I will try the above solution.

The reason why I wanted to try the upstream driver is because the mageia drivers are not working for me. I have tried doing XFdrake, drakeconf, and they proceed to the install the nvidia drivers, but it doesn't work. During the booting the login screen doesn't load up, and the text tells me that "wait for plymouth boot screen to quit" has failed. I stumbled upon a solution that was provided among these forums, which was to execute the command XFdrake (or drakeconf) and let the program do the job. Something about the wrong driver being choosen for the kernel or something (I maybe wrong here). I have done that step many times but the login screen doesn't load.

The last update to nvidia-current-375.26-1 result in a lack of graphical interface:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20192

Temporary solution is to install in the MCC the GeForce 8100 to GeForce 415 driver (packages of nvidia340) instead of GeForce 420 series and later (nvidia-current).

This is the problem I had today when I booted up. It has to be due to a recent update to Mageia. I have installed the original Mageia and have no problem so far. I have only updated the programs I use. I am strictly a user and use about a dozen programs.
