[SOLVED] Can't boot into new install on HP Envy with Radeon

Postby DiBosco » Jul 14th, '16, 19:36

Folks,

After much effort (spending all day on it) I managed to get M5 installed on this laptop. However, it won't actually boot. It gives me various errors, such as a general protection error.

I have tried to boot into VGA mode as I have seen someone else with a Radeon card to try this. I'm not even sure I actually managed to do this correctly, but after following these instructions:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_set_up_kernel_options

And typing vga=788 at the end of the Linux line, it does the same thing and looks exactly the same as if I hadn't done that.

At one point after trying this sort of boot it said

dependency failed for HOME

And all load of other dependency failed for other HDD partitions.

Sometimes, even I get a general protection fault it inches along and gives me loads of other command line call traces, task dumps etc.

If anyone could help me, I would be most grateful, this has been a soul destroying day. I just have no idea what to try now.

Thanks.

Re: Can't boot into new install on HP Envy with Radeon GFX

One thing that I find really weird about this is that 90% of the time it will boot into the live stick. Why would that be? What graphics would the live stick use that would be different to the installed version? How can I find what driver the stick is actually using? (Assuming this is the issue of course.)

Ta!

Hi, No, Windows has been completely wiped from the HDD.

It's nothing to do with Windows or EFI.

Well, I tried reinstalling using VESA as the my driver, but it's the same. Kernel panic or fixing a recursive fault which needs a reboot.

At install anything I try gives me an EE error where you set up the graphical server.

Debian with kernel 3.16 or thereabouts works, but the wi-fi only works with a later kernel :(

In the end this was really simple to fix once I knew what needed doing.

Apparently this laptop has SSDTs which are incompatible with Linux, so you need to add

acpi_no_static_ssdt as a kernel parameter at boot

You can add it in grub very easily as outlined at the end of this thread::

Only managed to install Mageia 6 STA 1. M5 would not install though.

Would be nice if you could add that bit and the exact HP envy model you have to the mga6 errata: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_6_Errata

Looks fine. It's more important to have the actual content in place, structure can be easily changed later on once the final errata gets completed.
And usually we also put reference links to where the issue was originally reported/discussed, be it bugzilla or forum threads.
