This doesn't answer your problem but this happens to me when I use Stellarium.
either when I select an object and rotate the view to it or as I exit. Both will cause either a log off to log in gui or a restart to terminal log in.
have just loaded vlc and kaffeine , other than the lack of sound (no mp4a encoder) they ran fine.

update Bangarang crashes out too
but still shows in system activity for times, kmplayer twice along with kaffeine - one is showing as disk sleep but none can be killed off.
banshee works but locks up then halts
sorry getting off topic now

VLC is working fine here, videos, music, converting stuff ....

Is this on Mageia 1 or on Cauldron (Mageia development version)?
What VLC packages do you have installed?
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep vlc

What desktop environment (GNOME, KDE ...) are you using, what graphics card,
and dou you have 3D / desktop effects activated?
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Hi,
Sorry, I forgot to tell the details of my O.S.:

Mageia 1 64 bits with Gnome desktop
No 3D / desktop effects activated
Graphic card SIS 670/671
Resolution is Automatic
I installed almost all VLC packages (mistake?)

Thanx!!

Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep vlc

For a SiS graphics card try switching to X11, open VLC →Tools → Preferences → Video, change the Output to X11 Video Output (XCB).

You can try switching to the Tainted version of VLC, which enables more codecs.
For this, run drakrpm-edit-media as root and activate the tainted_release and tainted_updates sources,
they should be there but disabled.

Then wait for the next update, or in software management (rpmdrake) switch the Filter to "All Updates"
and select the VLC package from tainted, should update all your current vlc packages.

Or update the system from terminal using urpmi:
Code: Select all
su
urpmi --auto-update -v

The problem is, if you want to hear AAC-encoded audio, be it embedded in a video or in music files, you will have no luck.
Due to patents and Copyright problems, FAAC, the library which would enable to decode this, is not available in Mageia.
Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAAC

More clearly: it is not yet available in Mageia repos. This nature of the library (among others) caused a discussion in the dev list about where to put it in repos (tainted_free / tainted_non-free). The discussion has ended but the consequentual actions have not yet been taken, due to summer holiday season mostly. (Doktor, pls correct me if I'm wrong)

Well, the discussion has come to a standstill, not ended. My try to bump it (again) failed, seems we have to wait till holidays are over.

faad for decoding/playing back AAC encoded files
faac to encode using the AAC codec

You only need faad, which is available in the Tainted repos, to play back AAC-encoded files.

What's the output of:
rpm -qa | grep tainted | sort

You didn't update the system fully after enabling the Tainted repos, for example vlc-plugin-common isn't the one from tainted (as it didn't show up in 'rpm -qa | grep tainted'. So make sure the Tainted Release and Tainted Updates repos are enabled, then as root:
Code: Select all
su
urpmi --auto-update -v

then try again.

Really Thanks guys...
initially i had same problem with vlc, smplayer, mplayer, kaffeine ,
video would works fine but no sound..vlc will give a output like this "VLC does not support the audio or video format "mp4a" ...."
Including "tainted" repo and "urpmi --auto-update -v " does the job.
