Isn't Primavera Spanish or Italian for spring? I don't think I will point out the obvious with that ;-) lol. Also I think magic names are over used. I like the science fiction based names myself, or even science/scientist based ones.

Here, here. There are a zilllon historical and literary mages around. Having been involved in ritual magick as a youth, I can tell you that there's a huge history there. The other thing to consider are accoutrements - athelame, talisman, hand of glory, pentagram, etc. In addition, there are tangential things as well that folk associate with magic -- Tarot, etc.

Mageia has already started this tradition with the "cauldron" concept. I think you should continue along that line:

Talisman
Athelame
Pentagram
Mandala
Grimoire

I understand a preference for names instead of numbers. Names can lessen errors relative to numbers, and can be easier to remember because connections made between names and other remembered data.

On the other hand, names, especially fictional character names, have other associations that may be neither appropriate nor pleasant. Consider that almost every story is an interesting story because it illustrates either change, for better or worse, or conflict, which may be considered bad de facto.

So, rather than fictional character names, with their many mental associations, perhaps Mageia distributions could be named after chemical elements -- hydrogen, helium, lithium, etc. Yes, there are some elements with strong mental associations, too, but fewer, and less variety, of them than fictional characters. Likely the better naming solution is an associated combination of an element name and a dotted version number.

I wonder if it's worth pointing out that Mandrake is also the name of a magician. :0
Then, I bet of you witty folks will be all like "Y U NO NAME MAGEIA VERSION MANDRAKE???? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL"
....
Cause, you know. Wikipedia says that's why Mageia is named Mageia in the first place. >.>

Allow me to advice to publish always ALL details in the 'name' in PR (publications and alike) if you are going to use names.

Not 'Mageia 2'. Not 'Mageia Einstein'. But always 'Mageia 2 Einstein'. Everywhere, always.
So people don't have to search the number when it is called 'Mageia Einstein'.
(Better no searching after 'Mageia 2' when writing 'Mageia Einstein'.)

And try to sync with the release-year and -date I would suggest. Of course this is not new; Ubuntu does it.
So maybe Mageia 1 Einstein etc. in 2011, Mageia 2 Paris in 2012, Mageia 1(11) Einstein a second version in 2011-november or something like it.
The better the desktop with the classic controls, the less chance of Mondriaan rectangles...!

I don't know about it... I just came out of Ubuntu 11.04 and I can't remember it's codename. xD
Anyway, I think just the straightforward numbering scheme of Mageia works just fine. It's not like it's difficult to understand. To use Windows as an example, I notice it looks like they might stop using their names, (XP, Vista) and using Windows 7 and 8. Which is what it is. Or video games, like the Final Fantasy series. Excluding the spin-off titles, they all end in roman numerals, starting from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy XIII. That game series is really famous, even without the fancy code naming. And people who play them will know which characters come from which games, and isn't very hard to search for at all.

The point is, it just seems unnecessary.

O, there is no need for me too.
Underlying thought to use names could be: "perhaps 'people' like it more cause feel and think it is more humanlike?" :)

Names may be nice and even witty for a moment. But if you think back and ask long time Linux users to think back - do you or did you find anyone who actually remembered names? No matter which distribution, all people will remember a 7.2 or a 4.1.1 or a 6.1 but no South African animal or a Traktopel or whatever. There may be an exception with Debian because the change not as frequently as others, so the names stick in user's minds.

Then, the next thing is the question about history: I often read user presentations like, "I started with Mandrake 6.1" or SuSE 4.4.1 or Ubuntu 6.01 - when was that? It does not say anything about how long ago this was. Mandriva changed to a more reasonable versioning, using the year as main version part. So, if somebody says he started with Mandriva 2009.1 you will know at once that this was in 2009.

Following this thought I'd like to see Mageia naming in the way of "Mageia 2012.3" if it is released in March 2012, the first release would have been "2011.6" (or any similar combination).

But, yes, I've heard there are people who give names to technical equipment. Some even talk to their computers....

(First of all, I tried to post all in only a post, but the forum system said the maximum number of URLs allowed is 15. So i needed to split the post. My bad :( )

Thought about a bunch of names for the "final" releases ;D I followed someone's idea of alphabetical names to make easer to know the "official number" of the release, and the ideia to make all the names based on famous mages and witches:

Mageia 1 - Agrippa
Mageia 2 - Blair
Mageia 3 - Circe
Mageia 4 - Dumbledore
Mageia 5 - Elvira
Mageia 6 - Faust
Mageia 7 - Gandalf
Mageia 8 - Hecate
Mageia 9 - I --- I couldn't find or decide on any name with I. Any suggestions?
Mageia 10 - Jadis
Mageia 11 - Kikimora (?)
Mageia 12 - Lilith
Mageia 13 - Merlin or Morgan Le Fay
Mageia 14 - Nessarose
Mageia 15 - Oz

Mageia 16 - Paracelsus
Mageia 17 - Queen (?)
Mageia 18 - Rasputin
Mageia 19 - Sabrina
Mageia 20 - Thessaly (?)
Mageia 21 - Ursula
Mageia 22 - Väinämöinen
Mageia 23 - Wizard Whitebeard
Mageia 24 - Xandrilia (?)
Mageia 25 - Y -- Same as the "I" Witch/Wizard :(
Mageia 26 - Zsuzsanna

It was a hard work to search for all these magicians, but it was a lot of fun :D
And that's just my suggestion, of course!

(Ps. Sorry for my BAD english. I'm brazillian ;D)

Nice, although a little bit more demanding than the NATO spelling :)
Have you checked all these names for availability as an official name of a distribution (like copyright issues (Dumbledore comes to mind), protected names, etc.)?

I only used parts of the name. I doubt that anyone can own the word "Dumbledore", or "Gandalf". If the name of the distro were "Mageia 'Albus Dumbledore'" I think that could be a copyright problem, but just the name.... And its just the name. We are not selling plastic figurines os characters, or writing a book with this names. But I dunno, I don't know the laws of the USA or other countries. In Brazil, that much is fine. But.....

:D I thought about using Discword names, but I only have the books in brazillian portuguese, so the names are a little changed. Harry Potter books suffered changes in brazillian translation too: Ron became "Rony" and Dean Thomas is "Dino". Even Luna "Loony" Lovegood changed to Luna Di-Lua Lovegood. I wasn't sure if the names I know are the original ones :D

I'm neither a lawyer nor a specialist in name protection, but I remember well the long and financially exhausting lawsuit of Mandrake vs Hearst about the comic character "Mandrake" - Mandrakesoft did not sell plastic figurines, comic books or magic wands either.
This is a very complex matter where even courts of the same countries come to different results. A friend of mine owned a small company, called "Mobilix", selling laptops with preconfigured Linux. The company who owns the rights on the "Asterix" comics sued him because of the name ending "-ix", the company won, he lost the case (in 3 different courts). Another lawsuit of the same company against a danish furniture company with a similar name ended with the opposite result.

So, I'd avoid any names from comics, movies, novels, etc.

And that sort of brings us full circle back to naming after long-dead real people.

I suggest the next version of Mageia should be named after Gael Duval.

I'd be very surprised if Gaël would agree to that idea! :)

Well, someone could...ask...him? Right? After forking Mandriva, and the way he was ousted from the company, a tribute to him would be very proper. I love the idea! If not, it could be in a more indirect way, such as just naming it "Gael" or "Duval", without the full name.

wobo wrote:Yes, may be it sounds nice to say "I just installed "Greedy Galileo" instead of "Mageia 3". But think future: Someone comes by and tells you that he has a version of Mageia, called "Helpful Higgs" - would you know at once whether it was Mageia 3 or 6 or 2?
Having version numbers instead of names has a reason. Ask Ubuntu users about when they started with Ubuntu - most of them will say the version number because nobody remembers the names, except for a distro which changes version as seldom as Debian.

Mandriva Linux used code names like Traktopel and Bamboo - do you remember which version that was and which of those came first?
(A: Traktopel = 8.0, Bamboo = 9.1)

thats a logical and sensible explanation
