[SOLVED] abiword 3.0.0 background color selector problem

Postby jbarntt56 » Dec 16th, '15, 05:25

My system is fully updated from the repos, and is 64 bit.

In Abiword, the Format->Page Background->Page Color doesn't work. I can select a color, and apply it but nothing happens. The background stays white. If I pick Page Image, instead of Page Color, I can select an image and it does work.

Any advise, much appreciated,

TIA,

jbarntt56

Yep, reproduced here. But I did a quick check and it with abiword 3.0.1 (latest stable release) it works just fine.
Please report that as a bug: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly

Has already been reported in the past, but there doesn't seem to be a bugreport against current version for this, only a pretty old one: http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8283
Others also seem to have this problem: http://askubuntu.com/questions/709937/a ... ound-color

Hi. as doktor mentioned, I think this is fixed in abiword-3.0.1 and it is related to abiword bug#13638 . Also see Changelog

Thanks, that's why I didn't find that bug you linked to :)
As it wasn't about background color, seems the colorpicker itself was the issue - when selecting the color e.g. via Enter then abiword will crash with a segmentation fault.
When just clicking the color would not be selected actually.

Seem to be fixed by those changelog entries:

Gtk Background Dialog: properly get the color on close with the new color chooser widget. Cherry-pick from trunk@35029 (Hubert Figuière)
Gtk Dialogs Background and options: fix the color chooser. (Hubert Figuière)
Gtk option dialog: fix the color selector for gtk3: We instantiate it manually instead of doing it in the UI file. This diverge from trunk. (Hubert Figuière)

Yep, i noticed that too after submitted my message. Seems that we should either cherrypick relevant code from 3.0.1 or update to whole package. I think that latter is preferable as 3.0.1 is pure bugfix release.

Exactly, I also don't see a need to separate out those few commits, as it's also only an update by one revision ...

The instructions on how to report a bug are confusing, to say the least. Apparently I need to download the lastest source, and compile and install it to see if that fixes the problem. From what has been said in this thread, it would appear that is the case. I much prefer to use the repos to get my software. I guess I will uninstall abiword 3.0.0, download the source for the newer version, compile and install it.

I've got a bad feeling about this, but I'll give it a try.

Thanks for all the replies, I didn't really expect it ;)

Could you please provide some details on which parts are confusing to you, so we might be able to change/improve them?
It doesn't mention anywhere to dowload latest source or to compile anything.

Why do you want to do the same I already did?

You should just open the bugreport, mention that abiword 3.0.0 doesn't work as expected regarding the colour selector,
and that 3.0.1 fixes the problem as verified in this thread already. FWIW I just opened the bugreport to get things going:

The update candidate was pushed to updates_testing thanks to Shlomi Fish, feel free to comment on the bugreport if the update to 3.0.1 fixes the background color issue for you.

Hi Doktor,

I added the core updates testing repo and installed abiword 3.0.1. The color selector works now. Thanks to you and Schlomi for fixing the problem. I am impressed with how quickly you solved the problem.

Reading the bug report, I see that it is not complicated to report a bug.

As to my idea to download the source and compile and install it, that was my thought. The bug reporting system certainly didn't suggest it.

Again thanks to all.
