[Solved] 5.1 audio doesn't work

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

[Solved] 5.1 audio doesn't work

Postby lightblue » Oct 5th, '15, 14:41

Hi everybody,

I just found out that only two speakers out of my 6 ones work (front right and front left)
In audio set-up, i have only built-in audio and GF106 hight definition , where the latter one doesn't work at all, and it's the only option that has 5.1 digital surround.

Thanks

Mine is intel, but it can't be activated, as i only can select Nvidia or built-in audio (which has only 2 speakers).

What 5.1 speakers do you have and how they are connected currently?

I have an Edifier 5.1 Surround Sound System,
And can i ask you what you mean by How they are connected?,
They're just working on my Windows 8.1, but here they don't.

How many wires do you have between the speakers and your computer, where are they currently plugged in? Analog or digital?

lightblue wrote:Mine is intel, but it can't be activated, as i only can select Nvidia or built-in audio (which has only 2 speakers).

Your system only sees two soundcards: The soundchip on your Nvidia with the HDMI output, and the HDA Intel onboard sound - the same as for 95% of all the systems out there with a graphics card.

You want to select the built-in audio, and as profile select 5.1 something.

3 wires, think it's analog, yup?

That is the important part. With the automatic configuration for this codec, it doesn't know anything about 5.1 sound.
Your model isn't even listed in the kernel documentation: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio ... Models.txt

And others have the same problem, no 5.1 profiles offered: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2209364
Some have even recommended to get the Realtek linux driver from http://www.realtek.com.tw/ and compile and use that - IMHO that might cause more problems.

What you still can try is to run alsamixer and press F6 and see if there are some further mixer options or channels that can be enabled/disabled.
And google for something like "linux ALC887-VD" and you will see that a lot of people have or had issue with that codec.

I didn't know anything about alsamixer, I run it, pressed F6 and and select HDA intel PCH, and then in the channel it was set on 2, i changed it to 6 and magically all of my 5.1 speakers started working.
I couldn't change it anywhere else, and that exactly did the trick.

I'd really like to thank you for your help, i was really disappointed and thought it would never be fixed.
:)
