Sad news! Mandriva in liquidation!

Postby pete910 » May 26th, '15, 22:05

I know not strictly Mageia but found out today that Mandriva filed for liquidation .

Personally it was Mandrake that got me hooked on *nix thus Mageia.

And I don't care what the *buntu guys say it was Mandriva that paved the way for easy installs/Management !

Edit:

Had no idea where to post this

Sad to read about, yes.

Fond memories of Mandrake too, as it was my Linux introduction.
I still think that M(andrake) C(ontrol) C(enter) is the best management system out there.
Long may it continue.

P.S.I may be a little bit biased.

Counting this a news-item, topic moved. ;)

Like for many of us, my first experiences with Linux too.

We had an Australian magazine that had a cover CD with Mandrake 9 that was for the original Xbox (hence my screenname). Never did get Mandrake to run properly on that: Typical M$, too many different versions :/

But it introduced me to Linux: and like Benmc says, MCC is the best management system by Miles, and miles, and miles. To me all the other distros are just half baked products: Ubuntu would be in liquidation if it wasn't for it's multimillionaire founder bank rolling it a decade after it's conception: Even with millions injected it's hard to make it profitable.

Makes me respect the big boys (RH, etc) even more for building true profitable investments.

It is kind of sad. Mandrake 9 started me on the Linux trail in earnest. Even with all it's faults it was a breath of fresh air to get away from M$. The irony is if it wasn't for Mandrake and the short comings of the company Mageia would probably not be here. Thank you to the peeps that got this distro off the ground. Thank you for keeping it going.

For anyone else who wants to take a wander down memory lane, most of the early Mandrake releases are available on-line:

I too started off with Mandrake then Mandriva. It was my salvation from the disgusting Windows at the time.
When I heard that Mandriva was going under and most of its staff had decided to create the new Mageia, I immediatelty jumped on the bandwagon and have never regretted it since.

RIP Mandrake/Mandriva.

I have had a look at the OpenMandriva but am sorry to say there was nothing there to be even likely to entice me to wander away from Mageia. However I wish them only good success for their hard and dedicated work.

Cheers. John. (now past the big 80)

OT!

Hey John! Was only thinking about you the other day. I'm still plugging away with urpmi after you sent me that Mandriva DVD many years ago.

I still check MUB from time to time, but it's sadly a ghost town now: A complaint I see across more and more forums as social media consumes more and more of society.

Mandrake/Mandriva is dead: Long live Mageia!

Well Hello John!

Big 80, wow...and I'm complaining about the big 50! 30 was the one that upset me, you know, yesterday I was 20, that means tomorrow I'll be 40 and here I am 51! I'm so glad you're doing well and I'm not surprised at all to find you using Mageia!

Anyway, yes, John you were a great help on the old forum. I had a few problems back then and he was always available to help. My problem was terminology I think. Windows terms didn't yield much Linux help.

A friend and I got a hold of a copy of Redhat. At the time Redhat came up with Gnome or we installed it that way not knowing what we were doing. While poking around on the net I heard about Mandrake and when I tried it, that was it, MCC & KDE. MCC was a Windows Control Panel work alike, or at least it was for me. A central place to mess stuff up without having to look for it.

I read about Mandriva a few minutes ago, times change for sure but my memories of the good ole days of Mandrake will always be good. It was what I wished I had been able to use when I first started around 15 years old on a Radio Shack computer. I read all about Unix and stuff, but there was no chance of running that. I've always been interested in the tweaking ability of a computer and OS. Windows was the cookie cutter OS.

Mandrake let me fiddle with everything and learn how it worked. Sad to see them go for sure.

My little rhyming goal that I set for myself was "Windows free in 2003". I demoed MDK8 (maybe 8.2?) briefly before working in ernest with the 9's to accomplish the task. I had tested others but the installer, MCC, and hardware compatibility out of the box won me over (and even then it wasn't as easy as it is today). After months of learning and experimenting (carrying around multiple hard drives as I traveled around the world), I succeeded... sort of. Since that time (2003), Mandrake, then Mandriva, then Mageia has been my primary operating system. I have still used Windows from time to time (I keep an XP install on Virtualbox for rare use), so I didn't quite make "Windows free", it's no longer my primary OS. 12 years, and it was M* that made it possible. I occasionally demo other systems, but I keep coming back here...

Long live Mandrake! ;)

Thank you to all who continue to make this possible.

Yep, Im another ex Mandrake user and former admin on the old mandrakeusers forum ( anon) Hi aussiejohn!
I even bought some shares in Mandrake many years ago to help them out, one good thing I won't miss now is the annual company report they continued to send me ....... it was always written in French :)
Best wishes to the Mandrake staff in finding new jobs.

Hi,
The Brazilian company Conectiva Linux, a former subsidiary of Mandriva also announced it will close. See in BrLinux (automatic Google translation): Conectiva SA is closing and seeks interested in buying rights handouts and other materials.

I went user of linux distro Kurumim Linux. In search of stability, I started to use Conectiva Linux distro. When it was bought by the French company Mandrake, the name changed to Mandriva, result of the union of Mandrake name with Conectiva = Mandriva. And then I started using Mandriva. In 2010 it was created the Mageia and in 2011 I started using Mageia.

For those who want to read a bit about the history of Conectiva, Wikipedia has a good summary: Conectiva. . and see also:
