isodumper 0.42 creates non-bootable usb stick

Postby bertaerts » Jun 4th, '15, 14:13

I tried to make a bootable USB stick with Mageia 5 RC.
I used the isodumper from Mageia 5 beta 3 with all updates, it is version 0.42.
But the USB stick contains one boot/hidden partition that is not recognized by GParted.
And my UEFI PC does not boot with it. While it does boot a USB stick with Windows 8.1.
The user interface is rather simple and I don't think I used it wrongly...
I first format to FAT32 and then write the iso image.
But removing the partition with GParted and only using the write iso image does not make a difference...

Hello
you can try again with the same iso and check if the hash number is good (md5 and sha1 are calculated at the end.
if it is always the same, try with dd if the result is the same and report it me if not.
As the tool is not the same the effect should be the same.

I need an UEFI USB stick and as far as I know the "dd" method is only applicable on Mageia 5 release and not on 5 RC.
I will try to use isodumper 0.41 in Mageia 4 which has an extra check button for UEFI...

With Mageia 4 and isodumper 0.41 I can make a bootable USB stick with Mageia 5 RC.
But I had to manually set the boot flag with GParted...

But when booting it I get a complete white screen with on top of the window the word grub and nothing else: no readible choices.
I press 2x arrow down and enter to select the "Boot Mageia 5 (Cauldron) Live from USB" which I found by looking at /EFI/BOOT/grub.cfg:
Immediately a black window appears with:
error: null src bitmap in grub_video_bitmap_create_scaled
error: invalid magic number
The ~/.isodumper/isodumper.log file of version 0.41 (M4) does not contain checksums.
The one of version 0.42 (M5) does and it is the correct sha1sum.

What is this? The very first alpha release of Mageia 5 ?

My laptop is equipped with an optical station and YES, Mageia 5 RC boots fine from DVD medium.
But you need to be patient, it is very slow.

I hope that Mageia 5 when it is released will come as an iso that can be loaded on an USB stick with the good "dd" approach.
That is what the announcement promised :-)

It will. If you want to test that it works on your hardware, try the latest boot.iso or boot-nonfree.iso (found in distrib/cauldron/x86_64/install/images/ on your favourite mirror).

I don't think that behaviour is due to isodumper, but the image.

The ~/.isodumper/isodumper.log file of version 0.41 (M4) does not contain checksums.

This is normal. The uefi method is not equal byte to byte to the ISO image, checksums have no sense.
The 0.42 release does only a dump, which can be checked with checksum.

No, but this part was a heavy job to work fine. And RC was done also to see such problems.
