Help with screenrecording

Postby danielpr » Nov 21st, '14, 21:24

Hi everyone.
I'm trying to record my screen, but, all applications that I have found for that are somehow glitched:
-xvidcap multi-frame recording doesn't work anymore
-qt-recordmydesktop is recording videos in a choppy way
-ffmpeg libx264 encoder doesn't seem to work (ffmpeg says that it doesn't exist), therefore FDesktopRecorder can't record videos in high quality

So, hm, do you know how to solve that or do you know any better screen recording program?
If anyone could answer me that, I would be grateful ^^

Hmmm, just checked
- xvidcap works fine here, saved 254 single pictures - which is pretty useless, IMHO
- qt-recordmydesktop does not capture everything, e.g. transparency or other desktop effects and the encoded recording seemed pretty short
there were also some artifacts, but speed was good - even when setting it to capture 30 frames per second, compared to the default ( 15 )
- FDesktopRecorder worked the best, recording 30 frames per second and the fullscreen recording was perfect, capturing all desktop effects and stuff.

Could you provide some more details about your box, CPU/RAM and graphics card and used driver?
Also please provide the output of
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active --list-url

And what do you want to record, and what do you want to do with the recording? Maybe something like byzanz works better for you?
It saves to .gif files, which can be watched nearly everywhere even without fancy video codecs, and performance and compression is pretty good ...
For convenient use, you can easily adapt it like this: http://choorucode.com/2014/01/24/how-to ... ng-byzanz/
Using that at work and for my needs it's just fine, and can be viewed in every browser or picture viewer.

FWIW, some other screencast alternatives:

gnome-shell builtin screencast feature
kazam
SimpleScreenRecorder
Istanbul
Cankiri

Well, the computer specs:
RAM: 3GB
Processor: Intel Core i3
Video Card: Intel HD Graphics

Also, this was the output of that command:
Code: Select all
Live Core /var/local/mga_rpms/core
Live Nonfree /var/local/mga_rpms/nonfree
Core Release http://ftp.las.ic.unicamp.br/pub/mageia/distrib/4/i586/media/core/release
Core Updates http://ftp.las.ic.unicamp.br/pub/mageia/distrib/4/i586/media/core/updates
Nonfree Release http://ftp.las.ic.unicamp.br/pub/mageia/distrib/4/i586/media/nonfree/release
Nonfree Updates http://ftp.las.ic.unicamp.br/pub/mageia/distrib/4/i586/media/nonfree/updates

You should remove the "Live Core" and "Live Nonfree" repos if you don't plan on using those local ones - and enable tainted_release and tainted_updates repositories.
Please check https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_man ... nd_updates and maybe http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/4/en/content/ ... media.html

Then run
Code: Select all
urpmi --auto-update
as root to get the tainted packages e.g. for x264 and ffmpeg.
