general questions about mageia?

Postby systems » Sep 16th, '14, 09:31

Greetings

I am very new to mageia, I just installed it few days ago on virtualbox
I use kubuntu as my main distro at home

I have few questions..
- Firefox, Kubuntu is very update to date about firefox, i am not sure how they do it, but i get new firefox release almost on the same day they are release,
mageia compared to this seems very lagging, so is there a way to get the latest firefox without have to migrate to cauldron?

- I see there is only one distribution of mageia, which seems to be very desktop oriented, does anyone use mageia on a server, is mageia targeting servers, is there plans for a server distribution?

- One final question not related to the distro itself, does the mageia website use perl catalyst, i noticed the catalyst logo in the url area when creating my user, i am a big perl fan, so if the mageia devs are also perlers, it will mean something to me... this is why i am asking?

regards

I can answer you some of your questions.

This is a decision that the developers of Mageia have made. Mageia uses the ESR of Firefox. You can read about this here and here. If you want to use the newest Firefox you can easily download it from here and install it to your home directory or to /opt/ if you want.

The classical installation DVD offers you some possibilities for installing Mageia for servers.

Hi! Welcome!

A bit of background first: Mageia is a community in the true sense of the word, as opposed to the Ubuntu community, which is ruled by a financial contributor/owner :)

That said, Mageia is the result of contributions by people in their own time, at their own pace :)

For this reason (amongst others including stability) we don't see the latest and greatest unless someone decides to own it, package it, get QA to test it.

As for being able to get the latest, sure, I did it years ago with Mandriva, I can't remember how these days, but a bit of googling will show you.

As for Mageia as a server, YEP! I have a box at work that's been running for ages, it works great. Check the wiki pages (link at top of page), during the install you can mess around and set up a minimal install if you so desire.

As for perl, I don't know, I'm not that involved myself unfortunately.
