advantages of using mageia

Postby dbxrecord » Jul 9th, '11, 08:16

Hi
I have noticed that Mageia has a distinct advantage over Debian based operating systems, it is far less resource hungry. Using Gnome it uses about 180mb of RAM
just sitting idle, using LXDE about 129mb and in IceWm 96mb But the real advantage is in CPU where it consumes on average one quarter to one third the CPU processing of a Debian system. I was shocked to see in System Monitor Ubuntu and Mint using 95% to 100% CPU which asks the question what are these systems doing consuming so much resources.

I really like the ability to change desktops ie Log out then pressing the notepad at login brings up the ability to change desktop. However to do this requires that Custom install be selected upon installation and for those required systems to be selected as options.

I also really like the community aspect of Mageia.

A good thing to help the project would be a section in the Forum or Blog called Mageia School where programming that may assist the project could be taught.

Go Mageia !! / Chris

Yeah, it definitely boots a lot faster for me than it does with the Debian based systems. (Oh, and thanks for the tip to changing the desktop environments. I was stumped!)

Mageia School ... I feel a Hogwarts parody/joke coming on. >.>

Alternatively, after installation, you can install the additional desktop environments by installing the appropriate task package, such as task-gnome, task-xfce etc. This is, in fact, the only way if you use one of the live CD's which do not offer the option to add additional desktop environments during system installation.
