Live download with Cinnamon desktop?

Postby Montala » Mar 30th, '14, 18:58

Hi,

It's my first post on here, and I have recently been looking at various Linux distros, including Mint 16, which quite appeals to me.

However, having been reading some glowing reviews of Mageia 4 over the weekend I would like to be able to download a 'live' DVD of a version with the Cinnamon desktop, but can't seem to find one on your website... just the KDE and Gnome variants.

Due to a very slow broadband speed here, I prefer to use Torrents whenever possible, and wondered if anyone can point me towards a live Cinnamon download link... Thanks! :)

Unfortunately Mageia comes with only GNOME or KDE live medias. You can use classic dvd edition or you can install cinnamon *after* Mageia installation from live GNOME/KDE media.

Thanks... I have already downloaded the full DVD edition, but that appears to only offer the option for a full and 'permanent' installation, rather than a 'Live' version.

Are you saying that I can use a Live KDE DVD, and then install and download Cinnamon while still in Live mode?

If so then that would be a good way for me to check it out!

I have to say it is not something I have done but yes you should be able to.

from MCC install task-cinnamon. accept all dependencies.
then to load the cinnamon de you will have to logout, choose your desktop and then login.
as you are aware nothing has been written to HDD so if you power off or reboot you will loose your cinnamon de and will have to reinstall it again.

further

boot the live kde disk you have.
go to Mageia Control Centre. go to " configure media sources for install and update ". add media repositories " core release 2 " and " core updates" at the very least.
then go to " add and remove software ". change " packages with GUI " to " all ". in the search bar type " task-cin ", check box "task-cinnamon" [ only 3 choices ] accept packages, then click " apply ". wait for download to be applied.
then select only log out- do not select restart or switch user
at the login prompt there is an icon - pen and paper. click it and choose Cinnamon.

p.s this was run in a virtual box with 2g ram.

just remember that it is only a work around and when you power down you will have to go through the entire sequence again.

Thanks for the 'walk through' benmc... I don't think I would have got there without following your detailed 'step by step' guide.

I am actually replying to this message in a live installation, with a Cinnamon desktop, using Firefox, instead of my usual Chrome browser.

My next step now is to 'reboot' into a live sesion of Linux Mint 16 as a comparison, just to see if I notice much difference.

Quite impressed with Mageia though! :)

good to hear.

currently you have a sort of hybrid d.e. setup as you also have some KDE applications..
if you now from the cinnamon desktop go to MCC and remove " task-kde " this will remove all of the KDE applications .

I havent tried this myself so do so at own risk.

An option is to do as I have and install a Virtual machine - I use Oracle, If you have the ram available you should set it to 1G and hdd of 12G. this way you can try any number of distros and keep your usual system until you find one that works even better for you than your usual one.

I have been using Mageia KDE since day one, Mandrake / Mandriva before that and have found it to be a very stable system.

Nope, it will not. Also, why remove desktops that you don't use? What if he wants to use some of the KDE applications, but not the whole desktop?
You might need an alternative when your main desktop is broken and you'll probably be glad if you have another graphical login, whatever desktop that might be.

good morning Doktor.

I was hoping to see if the Cinnamon only applications would remain and let the OP have a Cinnamon only DE that s/he is familiar with.
I did remove " task-kde" last night from my VM just to see what would happen but it left a lot of orphans, as expected.

Anyway, I hope the OP enjoys their Cinnamon and enjoys using Magiea.
