Postby Orestesss » Aug 30th, '13, 22:26

I am getting the attached message since installing a bunch of upgrades. Not sure what is the cause though, and I don't recall the system crashing. But, since those updates a few weeks ago (I just recently installed Mageia 3, hence various things needed updating) two things happened. I am getting the attached message concerning desktop effects and cannot now mess around with them (but I could before), but also: the screen dimmer on my laptop ceased working. I still get a dimmer bar on screen when I press the appropriate keys, but the light intensity does not actually go up or down, even though the %nrs do.

Concerning the desktop effects though, no response I choose helps, it always keeps getting back to this error message.

Any tips? :s

What graphics card are you using? What is the make/model of you computer?
Please show the output of
Code: Select all
grep -i driver /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Copy and past the output of the console into here via the code tags, cant make that out very well, but it looks like the catalyst driver to me.

What card model radeon do you have ? if you dont know do

Code: Select all
lspci | grep VGA
in a console. will give you the model/family . mine shows this

Code: Select all
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cypress XT [Radeon HD 5870]

Seems to using the correct driver,

Can you see what the Advanced tab in Desktop effects has in the settings eg compositing type.

Here's mine.

Image

What you can do is open a console and type

Code: Select all
kwin --replace &

That will then show any crash info as to what may have caused the problem, post here if shows anything.

Hi Pete,

I have attached the screenshot - looks pretty much identical to yours, it seems.

When I type the command you gave, I get this:

QCoreApplication::sendPostedEvents: Cannot send posted events for objects in another thread
kwin(3814): Compositing is not possible

There appears to be something blocking/stopping it! :?

Don't seem to be using/finding Opengl

Can you post the output of

We'll see if its a bad package install ,

as root in a console do

Code: Select all
urpmi --replacepkgs dkms-fglrx-12.104-3.mga3.nonfree x11-driver-video-fglrx-12.104-3.mga3.nonfree fglrx-kernel-3.8.13.4-desktop-1.mga3-12.104-10.mga3.nonfree fglrx-control-center-12.104-3.mga3.nonfree

do a reboot after that.

:) no worries, don't get me started on the use of sudo the way *buntu uses it......

It's looking like you will have to remove the driver first then install again

console again do

Code: Select all

root password

Then
Code: Select all

If it says anything about orphans ignore it

Do a reboot when its done.

If any errors show, post the output.

Ah, that seems to do the trick!

I did get an error message once when starting up my computer, saying KWin had crashed and giving me a black screen, but a reboot solved that.

I'll give it a week and see if it does that again. If not, I'll consider this solved.

8-) wobbly window time... :D

Doubt it will be a problem, seemed to be a bad package install.

Mark topic as solved when your happy please.

Pete.

P.s if you do

Code: Select all

You should now see somthing like this

Code: Select all

Wow, another AMD/ATi card having problems. :(

I too have an AMD 5870 GPU and have had problems. Have you tried using the open-source graphics driver instead of the proprietary one? That's what worked for me. Also, release notes at KDE.org show that the proprietary driver (fglrx) doesn't support OpenGL compositing in Kwin as well as the open-source driver. I can try to hunt down the link for that info if you like.

Cheers :D

Interesting response, Especially since this was a package install error not the driver/card itself :?

Side note.

Had a 5870 since week of release and not had a single issue with Mageia. ;)

oh, am lying I got the firefox black background bug numerous releases ago

Tried using the oss driver for gaming? Any luck with l4d2 , NS2, Wargame EE, X3 series

99/100 times it's user/distro error and not the driver it's self.

Other distros i cant comment on but Mandriva and Mageia2/3 have worked flawless with me, 1 laptops and 2 desktops as well as installing for others with amd GPU's in
