[SOLVED] Wine will not run MS Paint

Postby Randall » Jun 18th, '13, 00:50

I downloaded MS Paint from http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...us/paintnt.exe
I then moved the download to a desktop folder I created. I then installed the Wine emulator. When I right-click the paint icon, the menu gives an option to "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader". When I click on that option, nothing happens.

Make sure the wine service is running. Run the wine configurator and then try installing your application.

What version of Windows was this application built for for? The link you gave goes nowhere.

I ran the Wine configurator and in its drop-down menu I tried several Windows versions, since I do not know which Windows version the Paint application was created for. I tried clicking on the download link i have above in this thread, and you are correct in that it goes nowhere, but when I click on that link when the link is in my Word document, then it does allow me to download the MS Paint application. When I was in the Wine configurator, I clicked the "Add application" button and added the paintnt.exe application, but that still did not help.

The question arises as to why.
Does paintnt do something Linux native paint programs don't?

I just installed Linux KolourPaint and it looks similar to MS Paint. I do not like the GIMP graphics editor. I am used to using MS Paint and would like to continue using it in Linux, but if Wine will not run it, then I will start to use KolourPaint.

I think it is important to note that Gimp is not intended to fill the space occupied by MS Paint. Kolour Paint is much closer. You might also want to look at GNU Paint and MyPaint. Both are closer to the level of MS Paint. Gimp is more on the level of Adobe Photoshop. In between would be apps like Krita. And, of course, on an even simpler scale than MS Paint would be Tux Paint designed for children. - George

I just downloaded a second file of MS Paint, but this time it is a Windows XP version of MS Paint (paint.exe) from
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia ... t-XP.shtml

This time I am able to enter the setup process and installed it in C:\Program Files\Paint XP.

I got a "Program error" dialog box that said, "The program InstallManager.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".
So I right-clicked paint.exe, selected "Properties", selected "Permissions" tab, and enabled "is executable". After that, I was able to complete the installation of Paint.
Now when I go to the start menu, Wine lists Paint XP and Paint 98, but when I click on either one of them, I get the bouncing ball for about 15 seconds, but Paint does not open.
Should I have installed it somewhere besides C:\Program Files\Paint XP?

From "Install and Remove Software" (rpmdrake), install playonlinux. After you start PlayOnLinux, click on "Install", and then the category "Graphics". From there you can select Microsoft Paint, click install and PlayOnLinux will download and install it and configure the wine drive for you. I tried it just now and this worked. I've found using PlayOnLinux to be the easy way to install and run programs in WINE.

I installed playonlinux from the MCC and I am now able to use MS Paint in Mageia Linux.
Thanks
