No sound on new install

No sound on new install

Postby broadstairs » Jun 15th, '11, 22:19

I have just done a new install on a different hard disk and now on this install I have no sound at all. If I try to run pavucontrol it says Establishing connection to PulseAudio Please wait and then in the console window it says DEBUG: Connection failed, attempting reconnect and keeps doing this forever. I have no sound at all. In my previous install on a different hard disk on the same PC sound worked. This does not bode well if Mageia cannot reliably install on the same hardware configuration twice and get it to work.

I have two sound cards one on my ATI gfx card and the VIA one on the m/board, the correct one is selected as master. Anyone any ideas?

Make sure pulseaudio is actually enabled, using draksound (the Mageia control center -> Hardware -> Sound Configuration).

Well for some reason I decided to unplug my Logitech webcam and sound just started. pavucontrol also now works fine. Have no idea why, I might try with it plugged in again tomorrow. It worked OK on the previous install.

You have more than one sound device (the system sees the webcam as a sound device as it has a mic, I think). What you could do is mark the actual sound card (not the webcam) as the fallback device, you can do that from pavucontrol -> "Output Devices", then click the green-tick-mark icon next to the appropriate device.

Ahmad this is all very strange as on Mandriva i had the identical configuration and it worked. I have 3 sound devices, the web cam, sound on my ATI gfx HD4350 card and sound on the motherboard. The web cam is obviously only input. The other strange thing was that my initial test installs of Mageia both RC and final worked OK and did not exhibit this problem. Cant do any testing right now as my main PC is not working (being upgraded).

Well, IIUC, it all depends which device the system picks up as the default at boot, so an important factor here would be if the webcam is plugged in at boot, or after booting... etc.

Marking a device as the "fallback" one via pavucontrol should work across the board.

Well I now have my main PC back up and working. I'll do some playing and see what happens.

I'm having the same exact issues as broadstairs here. Whenever I plug in the webcam, the sound immediately goes off. However, when I unplug the webcam, the sound (on my speakers/headphones) comes back on. This is an issue because I'm always on video conference calls for my job. My company has requested that I utilize a webcam (for viewing purposes) as opposed to the group phone calls. Can someone help me out? :(

I would say, check pulse audio volume control. I think when you plug the camera, the system use it as a sound card(for microphone maybe) and change your outpout too...
try to choose other device...
