Unable to boot after latest update Sunday 7 April

I'm running beta 3 on a Dell 8600 laptop. After installing the latst updates, including new kernels, the system will not boot, even in failsafe. An old Mandriva installation on the same machine still works. Should I reinstall the beta4 DVD?

Also, if you press ESC during the boot to see the loading messages what is the last one or two you see?

It won't boot any Mageia3 beta4 kernel. I don't have Magiea 2 on the disk. Unfortunatley, the display duirng the boot attempt goes by too fast and then dissapears, so I can't read it. Is there some way I can slow it down, stop it, or recover the log?

Does grub has "nokmsboot" in it?
Can you print out entry for menu.lst?
And fdisk -lu.

I have no problem at all with any beta4 kernel (but I use grub2 to boot).

When I try a regular boot the display is brief and vanishes before I can read it. If I use failsafe, the display is much longer, and starts into Mageia 3. The last line before it vanishes is "Reached taqrget sound card".

Please look into it.
My later post is just to 'elucidate'. (because I'm guessing Ken's guessing the new kernel does not pass dkms modules (graphics) )

[edit] -hint - don't just press <esc>. Keep on "tapping" on it.

[edit] and if you're on grub2 (cannot assume everyone's on grub-legacy), the key is <shift> key. Tap on it.

I am using grub, not grub2. I cannot boot any Mageia kernel. I can boot an old Mandriva system. I suspect that the problem is with the video card, since disc activity continues for some time after the screen goes blank.

Assume you can go edit menu entry now.
Add to kernel line "nomodeset" (without appos quote) or "modeset=0" and try again.
If it boots, let us know graphic card details and someone else here can help you to set up graphics drivers.
(I'm bad with graphics drivers, always get it right, therefore no experience)

Ah wait...... Mageia's great with this. Just use MCC to detect hardware and select corresponding driver also in MCC.
