Mageia3b2 x86_64: k3b fails to burn 25GB Blu-ray media

I recently got a SATA Blu-Ray burner LG WH14NS40 (OEM) and some Verbatim 6x speed 25 GB BD-R media. k3b is consistently failing to burn using this combo on a 4GHz Intel core-2 quad PC. k3b version: 2.0.2.

Proceeded like this: Copy all files from 6 DVDs individually to folders named DVD1, DVD2, ..., DVD6. Then from k3b data project, added those 6 folders (18GB) in and started burning with default parameters. Failed after 20-25 minutes ... after writing 100%, k3b says "Error writing media". The log file shows the last two mkisofs commands getting issued and then nothing. No error message in log file. Visually, the media looks like it got written 18GB out of 25GB.

Tried again. This time set the speed to 4X. Same result.

Here is some extra info for what it's worth:
1. If I burn a 4.7GB DVD in it, it works fine.
2. Fedora 17 k3b in Plasma desktop fails the same way in the same PC.
3. Win7 64-bit on a much slower PC burns an 18GB tar/gzip version of the same DVD1..6. I moved the burner to that PC. It had never seen a Blu-ray burner before. That PC was disconnected from internet before I powered on after installing the burner and then burnt it in about 45 minutes while remaining disconnected from internet. After burning, I move back the burner to the original PC with Mageia3b2 and Mageia is able to read the newly burnt media.

Is it possible your / partition is filling up, 25GB would be alot of free space to have there.

You can tell k3b to use ~/tmp instead IINM.

The disk space could be a problem but not for me this time. My partitions are big.

I found the solution in Ubuntu forum. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2047399&highlight=blu+ray and the longest post (sorry, I forgot the name) in there. The problem according to the poster is legacy code which needs to be updated with latest cdrtools.

Soln:
1. Download cdrtools.tar.gz from ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/; expand it; make it; be superuser in the same dir and then "make install".
2. The result will be in /opt/schily/.
3. Tell k3b to search and it will show this /opt/schily as an option. In burn menu, make sure to choose "cdrecord" and "No Multisession".

Did all that in Fedora-17 in the same PC where k3b was failing. And success!

- Made 10 coasters ($13) in order to eliminate my PC hardware and the burner hardware.
- It came down to either LG's tweaking of the firmware (because there are multiple WH14NS40 available as various prices at Amazon and there is no difference in model number -- as far as I could tell) OR, the Linux software.
- I tried Mageia 3b2, Fedora 17 and Fedora 18 in 2 PCs using k3b 2.0.2 in various configurations over the last couple of days and never succeeded until now.

So, in a day or two let me repeat the same process in Mageia 3 B2 and then we can forget this issue! I have a few images and the log for successful burn attached. Max 3 images per post... so the next 3 images in the next post.

Looks like I spoke too soon.
The same process in Mageia 3B2 makes k3b finish the burning successfully but it is not readable. Taskbar pop-up menu comes on after media insertion .. I choose "Open with File Manager" and it reports "Could not mount media". But it says the correct volume name given to it from k3b.

The "make" process in Fed-17 had one warning that I caught... ext2_fs.h not usable.
In Mageia 3B2 I grabbed the screen output and I see there is one extra ... about /usr/src/linux/include. That path is empty in my case. But so was in Fed-17 too!

The k3b log of Mageia 3B2 shows KDE Version 4.10.0. The Fed-17 had it 4.9.5. Other than that the burn logs are similar.
I am confused. Maybe I should try Mageia 3 Beta-3 when the DVDs come out.

At last, some good news. I burned Blu-ray 3 times without error using Mageia 3 Beta 3 and the cdrtools from ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

Here is what I did:
1. Download Mageia 3B3 64-bit full 4GB DVD and install fresh in a 300GB partition. No extra repository other than just the DVD.
2. Installed kernel source from the DVD (hoping the make of cdrtools wouldn't complain). Probably was unnecessary.
3. Made cdrtools (from berlios.de) and installed it. K3b can locate it easily.
4. Pointed the temp working dir of k3b to a newly created folder inside the user's home folder. That made k3b report 288GB of free space in the "Image" tab of "Burn".
5. Used cdrtools, No Multisession, 4X speed as before and the process worked. I repeated it 3 times. Fed-17 can read Mageia 3b3's burned media. Each time I burned at least 5 and sometimes 6 DVD contents (around 20-22 GB) into 25GB media without making tar/gzip ... just the entire file structure as were in those DVDs. I left at least 800MB of free space for directory structures because an earlier burn failed with growisofs when I got greedy and pushed to 22.8 GB size. K3b reports the empty size as 23.3 GB for these 25GB media.

Note:
- Before Step-3 above, I tried the original Mageia 3b3 release using growisofs and that failed just like before. Coaster# 12!
- I did not try the cdrecord of original Mageia 3b3 (I thought of it but actually forgot to check whether the option was there or not in the burn menu).
- The log for "make" of cdrtools is same between Fed-17 and Mageia 3b3. Both are showing following serious warnings and fatal errors:-

So, is the problem solved? I would say this is a workaround rather than a complete solution. Waiting for suggestion if to mark this as SOLVED.

1) It proceeds painfully slowly. One third the speed or worse than I am accustomed to with Nero on Mageia 2. The fact that /tmp is now apparently mounted on RAM and quotaed at 2GB might be a contributing factor BUT strangely the problem doesn't seem to be afftecting DVD burning.

2) It finishes with an error at 99% complete.

My past experiece with K3B and bluray has been pretty discouraging. Nero has discontinued their Linux product so I keep hoping that K3B will get their act together on bluray media issues. Of course, apparently Bracero burns blurays now also. My previous experience with Bracero has been good, I may just give it a try in the future. I am also going to try some of the tips above on K3B. In my case I WAS able to mount the resulting disc (from the failed burn decribed above) AND it checked out OK with md5sum so I am assuming it is a good disc. K3B is fabulous for both CD and DVD. I only wish it would work as well with bluray.

The disk space could be a problem but not for me this time. My partitions are big.

Just a warning. Out of the box install has /tmp mapped into memory, not disk.

Yes, the /tmp mapping is different in Mageia.

To ghmitch: I can vouch I successfully made 3 BD-R disks in Mageia 3B3 with the Cdrecord from Berlios website. They are readable in Win 7 64-bit using another LG WH14NS40 (OEM) that I purchased (Newegg). They are also readable in Fedora-17 64-bit.

After that, I switched to Fedora-17 to burn 4 more BD-R disks using k3b+Cdrecord(Berlios) as explained earlier. They are readable in Mageia 3B3 as well.

It was quite amazing to see the voluminous collection of my backup DVDs shrink down to just 7 BD-R media! Could have brought that down to 4 BD-R 50GB media but haven't tried them out yet. $4 is high for a coaster, just in case...

If other users had success in burning Blu-Ray using k3b of Mageia 3B3 as released, I would like to know.

Thanks elmago for all the information. I haven't had a chance yet to make another attempt at burning a blu ray disc, but when I do, I will be attempting to incorporate all of the tips you have posted here. I am sure that one problem is that I have been using growisofs which is the default application in K3b. Next time I will try cdrecord. I am only hoping that cdrecord supports UDF because my files are gigantic. If not, that will really mess me up with K3B.

Indeed I was getting bananas trying to make backups on DVD-Rs. Its not only the problem of number of DVD-Rs one accumulates but also the fact that many times, at least in my case, the files involved are over 4G in size and simply don't fit on DVD-Rs. BDRs solve the problem neatly. I just went through all my hundreds of old CDR backups and transferred their contents to around 3 BDRs. I don't know how I managed for so long without bluray, but I has to wait until the price came down out of the stratosphere. Thanks again for all of the good information. I'm using Windows to burn Blu-ray backs ups of photos and not too happy about with that solution. I have the same LG WH14NS40 and it's a great drive but I wasted a few disks trying to figure out the problem. I think Blu-ray is sort of taking a back seat to USB thumb drives etc but that's not the same at all in my opinion.

I totally agree. I don't think the Blu-ray movie business is as successful as they had hoped but I have a feeling most are like me when it comes to data backup. I not only waited until the drives were reasonably priced, but until the media was also. I juggle files between HDD's and have one in an external case that I only turn on to back up to and then shut it off, but I want to mail 10GB's of photos and mailing off my HDD isn't an option.

I've read there are some work arounds, but I don't think those should be necessary and I see this as a chance for Mageia to take a step ahead in terms of hardware/media support. One of the Ubuntu users says something like "great, something else for them to bash Ubuntu over" in one of the comments of the above article.

Linux, all of them, like to say it runs on older hardware and has drivers and supports older/newer file systems etc etc etc, and Blu-ray is far from extinct as far as data back up goes. With 4k video rapidly approaching they may have a new disk format coming out, burners and all, I haven't checked. Still, if they do that'll be expensive as always and will drive down the price of Blu-ray even further so I think Mageia needs to support it right out of the box. The biggest complaint that anyone has ever had about any Linux is fiddling with it to get a printer or any other device working and in this case Blu-ray burning would be easy to fix.

I needed to have shoulder surgery and have had that done now so I'll be able to be on the computer a bit and I'll try and see what I can find out. At the time I ran into the problem I just used Windows and got them burned and forgot about it until I felt like dealing with it. I love Mageia and have a few converts and this will be a lot of work if I have to go manually fix them all. It's be awesome to get an update that fixes this so that it would work after a fresh install and then updating.
