[SOLVED] Firefox tabs are on top, want them on the bottom

Postby widget » Jan 29th, '13, 03:28

Is there a way to do this?

Used to be an option.

If it is in "about:config" please tell me where. I may easily have missed it as I was pretty punchy after the first several pages of that. It all looked the same after a while.

If that is not the answer is there a way to create an Add On Bar that will do take the tabs.

Putting the tabs at the top is about the stupidist thing I can think of. I use my tabs a lot. Why would you want to have to move the cursor clear to the top of the window everytime?

I've never seen an option to put Firefox tabs at the bottom - but you can move the tab bar down from the very top to below the bookmarks bar. Right-click on an empty spot in the tab bar and de-select "Tabs on top".

Ah. Knew there had to be a way.

Not on Mageia right now. Am using Iceweasle for this post and it still has the option in the View>Toolbars option (have to enable the tabs to be on top if you want that).

Thanks a bunch. Will be giving this a whack as soon as I get over there.

I thought by "bottom" you meant the bottom of the page. :)

BTW in about:config search for tabs.on for this option.

Sorry. I've just realised that I was on my Windows box when I answered. There I have the option in View/Toolbars. In cauldron, it is necessary to use about:config to move the tab bar.

If you disable the Firefox button, it will be again below View -> Toolbars.

Yes, once you change the option so that Tabs are not on top, then on re-starting Firefox, the option View/Toolbars/Tabs on top is added. That option comes and goes on restart of Firefox, depending on whether or not tabs were on top when Firefox was last closed. (This happens in both Windows as well Mageia 2 and cauldron.) The objective seems to be to make it easy to switch back to the default option, and less easy to depart from the default. I suppose that there is some logic in that.

This sounds like a rather silly improvement.

What is meant by;
If you disable the Firefox button, it will be again below View -> Toolbars.

What FF button?

Where on earth do you find this is about:config?

That seems like the way to go. Get it right there and and it would be portable to other installs or at least documented in my cheat sheet.

Found it;
Code: Select all
browser.tabs.onTop;false

This is what it looks like now - was "true".

Does not change the fact that there is no option in the menu. Fine with me this will work fine.

Well, since Firefox 4 IIRC the default menu bar was replaced by the "Firefox" button, and it can be re-enabled
by clicking on the Firefox button -> hover over Preferences -> and select Menu bar, or like described in Mozilla Knowledgebase:
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dis ... nu-toolbar
This is what i mean:
Image

And no need to go to about:config for the setting for the tabs, at least until Firefox 10 you could just click on the dropdown menu
in the tab bar -> right-click and deselect Tabs on top. Mozilla Knowledgebase now suggests this is not possible anymore:
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/put ... -on-bottom
We are improving for the worse :/

TBF, all that information is just one google search away :P

Re: SOLVED Firefox tabs are on top and I want then on the bo

Postby widget » Jan 30th, '13, 01:48

I haven't found anything on this searching. Probably not using the correct search terms.

Will have to look at the thing more closely when I get over there again later.

Thanks for the info though.

Seems like in the name of effeciency, at least according to some, we need more keystrokes or mouse clicks and more mouse movement.

Gnome Shell is going that way. Unity seems designed to use as much of your time as possible playing with it. It is all just silly.

I can see that some of this may be better for touch screens but they are not what folks use for real work like text document creation where you may need several tabs in your browser open and handy for checking facts and data.

I do not see that moving the browser tabs to the top is of any advantage to anyone unless they do not use them at all. If it were for ease of using touch then they need to be taller and away from the menu bar.

Oh well, probably just a grumpy geezer.

Nope.

Don't have a firefox button.

Don't remember ever having a FF logo there either now that I think of it.

Will have to upgrade the version on my Dreaded Mother in Laws MS box and see what it looks like, don't remember the version she is running. I have Debian installed on there so that I can back up her stuff and have something for her to fall back on when Vista chokes on her (she does not do much for security and won't).

That is my excuse anyway for not having to open that MS crap. So beyond installing it for her and showing her how to use it 3 years ago I just don't look at it. It may have something like that.

If you go to view/toolbars and disable menu bar you don't get the menu button in the upper left?

Ah, will have to give that a try.

Never even crossed my mind to do such a thing.

Well, you always need to remember that you're (most definitely, as otherwise you'd know that button, existent since FF 4.x)
using a custom profile, try with a fresh one just to find out what the default now is - or what Mozilla wants us to like ;)

It may be true that it has been there since 4.

I use Debian with Iceweasel which is pretty much FF with security updates provided by Debian in a more timely fashion than be FF. I am use version 10.0.12 because I like it.

The only thing I have done to customize FF in Mageia is to move the tabs to the bottom. Other than that I have added one folder to the bookmarks bar.

Removing the menu bar here removes the menu bar and that is all.

The only thing that I can think of is perhaps something with my video card which is fairly up to date (Radeon HD 6450 PRO) but using the foss drivers. Don't really buy that though because I do use the fglrx driver under Squeeze (Debian 6) and have used it under Debian Testing and Sid and have never seen anything like that in Iceweasel. Have also have not seen it on an Ubuntu install, ever, of FF.

My wife runs Ubuntu 10.04 with FF and it has nothing like that.

I also have several LMDE installs with the Mate, Cinnamon and Xfce DEs, all using FF and don't see it there either.

I am about to pop over and play with Mageia for a while. Will definitely be checing this out.

Will stop over at Lmde of some kind and check there first. This has gotten me quite intrigued. None of those installs has been customized any more profile wise than Mageia has (well I may have changed the home page).

OK, going to have to make this 2 posts as the drive I am on will not be connected when I go to Mageia.

I am on LMDE with the Mate DE.

Firefox by default. Have not set this up much at all. Tabs are on the bottom.

There is a FF logo on the top right.

I have removed the menu bar and restarted FF. There is no FF button. See screenshot !.

This is FF 17.0 and it does have the option in the menu for getting out of tabs on top (View>Toolbars).

I get the same thing from the FF icon as with the menu bar on or off. See screenshot 2

Maybe I'm the weird one, that all of my ff installs revert to a button, containing the 'classic' menu lists thereunder, when I uncheck "menu bar" under view/toolbars ? :? <click-click> ..button, <click-click-click-click> ...no button, <click-click> ..button, <click-click-click-click> ...no button, <click-click> ..button, <click-click-click-click> ...no button.. maybe I'm already asleep and dreaming?

@widget: Please do not compare distro-customized packages, as upstream is the default here, and Mageia does not change that much in that regard.
Iceweasel is a completely unbranded Firefox, so there will obviously be no Firefox button.

Get the tarball from upstream, create a fresh profile, and see ...
EDIT: Just checked, and Mageia default is also to display menu bar ... But windows default is to show Firefox button.
And under Mageia, when disabling menu bar, you will also get the Firefox button. Seems like Mozilla doesn't push this as
default under linux, as most linux users are pickier about such stuff :D

Every thing here acts exactly like the LMDE FF install except that there is no option to not have the tabs on top.

I even tried different themes to see if that effected this alleged "button". Doesn't happen.

I don't have any windows installs in this house. We don't even let people bring that stuff in here.

There is the install of Vista that my Dreaded Mother in Law has across the street. Will take a look at that. She uses FF.

Been playing in here longer than expected. Pretty well set up and have the music cranked up. Looking pretty good to me. Sounds good too.
