Boot up using kernel rc4 then open the Mageia Control center > Software >Management use the drop boxes at the upper left make sure they are set to all all then do a search for kernel. I'm willing to bet kernel-desktop-devel-latest is not selected but kernel-desktop-latest is. Select the former .. You can also scroll down and select kernel-desktop-devel-3.8.0-0.rc5.1.mga3 as well make syre you select either the i586 or x86-64 depending on what you currently have. Next do a searck for dkms and make sure it's checked, dkms - Dynamic Kernel Module Support Framework if it isn't it should auto-select dkms-minimal for installation. install them then reboot you should now boot into the rc5 kernel by default and by installing kernel-desktop-devel-latest and dkms the next round of kernel updates should not break your graphics.

Per suggestion have checked again installed packages.
Already were installed:
kernel-desktop-devel-3.8.0-0.rc5.1.mga3
kernel-desktop-3.8.0-0.rc5.1.mga3
kernel-desktop-devel-latest
kernel-desktop-latest
dkms - Dynamic Kernel Module Support Framework
dkms-minimal - Dynamic Kernel Module Support Framework - minimal package
dkms-nvidia-current - NVIDIA kernel module for GeForce 8xxx and later cards
nvidia-current-kernel-3.8.0-desktop-0.rc5.1.mga3
nvidia-current-kernel-desktop-latest
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current

Thanks, but rc5 boot still fails at "reached target Graphical Interface"

At my fresh installation the proprietary nvidia driver was installed and worked nicely.
Then I did updates which included new kernel and nvidia. After reboot it stopped at the step when x server is started. Logging in on tty2 I see that
Code: Select all
modprobe: Error: could not insert 'nvidia_current': no such device
So I guess there's a package missing
