testing a3

Postby djmarian » Nov 16th, '12, 10:23

hi,

not many around this forum...
after testing mint cinnamon 14, mageia 2 started not working so well so i just tried mageia 3 alpha 3 from dual cd on a raid ssd+hdd

after noticing lilo instead of grub, first boot did something ...
i got something like repair... i typed exit and it worked fine
just installed my favorite soft and i'm going to reboot to see if i can get that repair thing again
did not try my sound card yet ...

no repair thing this time, no sound (still)

some things i've see so far, not sure if they are bugs:
- cannot open file ro.uni (also in mageia 2)
- /bin/loadkeys/ failed with error code 1
- when hitting logout i don't have shutdown and reboot, suspend does nothing
- nautilus does not have icons for anything (back,search...), does not have the file, view... menu

some are maybe because i used my old home folder

also 1 q, what is the difference between lilo and grub?

LILO upstream has been dead, but Debian started to develop it again almost 2½ years ago http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/

DrakX doesn't support setting up a graphic menu for LILO, but for GRUB that works fine. There are undoubtedly more differences, though. Anyway, I'm surprised you got LILO without choosing it, that didn't happen in my Mageia3 pre-alpha3 install.

Hi Wilcal,

Nice :)

Which bootloader do you have? Was that the default one, or did you choose it while installing?

djmarian's logout bug might be https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8073

Does everything work fine for you?

@ djmarian: Which DE do you use?

When I test things things I use a scratch drive and use

http://how-to-erase-hard-drive.com/

Killdisk to zero out the HD in total. I burned the DVD from the ISO and started
the install from there. The ultimate bootloader will be the default one that the
DVD disk creates. So it's a complete from the ground up install with nothing
on the HD to begin with.

I also consider the install complete when I get to the working KDE desktop.
Everything after that is application specific.

yes i have seen that bug for logout, i use the power button more often anyway

i use LXDE, i find it to work best (also e17 is nice but i did not get used to it yet and i see it will no longer be supported)

from what i remember, i just clicked on the bootloader thing during installation to see if it detected mint, mageia 2 and i don't know if i have anything else
i did not change anything but maybe i don't remember well
should i check again?

also i see something about locale settings:

Code: Select all
urpme kdelibs4-handbooks
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
   LANGUAGE = "en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en",

Did you use LiveCD KDE/GNOME, English-only? If yes, this is probably bug 3723. I seems that setting time zone mess up locale if those languages are not installed.

nope, dual arch on a sdhc

IIRC that one is English only too. So probably same limitation exists.

Workaround about locale bug 3723 is simple. Just install package locale-ro (I hope that is right name for your language).

For other issues I'm unable to help.

Now I have a question for you :D. Why do you disable BBCode in Options if you use it?

BTW, I'm also a translator. It's a long time ago since I saw you on i18n mailing list or IRC. Please keep in touch and come around sometime. There is still some work to do ;).

Strange. Are both locales and locale-ro installed? What is the output of "locale" in CLI?

I'm a bit confused as web page report says there it's still some work left in Romanian for web pages.

You should add it. As you see from locale output it isn't consistent now. See app db for more info.
