Kmail again not receiving mail.

Postby pnunn » Feb 1st, '12, 12:42

Kmail has again stopped receiving mail (not a network issue this time).

Just sits there as though there is no mail to get, yet other clients show the 20 odd emails waiting. This is VERY annoying as it looks as though no mail is there when infact there is.

akonadi resource shows the resource as "Connection Established" rather than "Ready" and the Browser returns "Unknown error (Unable to fetch item from backend).

Why is Kmail the most unstable bit of this whole KDE release. Its is going to force people to another desktop for sure if it goes on like this.

Again, I know this isn't an issue with Mageia, but it IS going to impact on its uptake.

When my kmail stopped working because of the akonadi change I switched over to Thunderbird and did not look back.

Thunderbird works fine.

Thanks for the input guys. Mikala I did eventually get it working by restarting the agent (but needed to do it several times to get it going). Banjo, I too use thunderbird, but.. this is a testing release and the kde components NEED to be working properly before this flies to less educated, for want of a better work, users. Neither having to muck around in akonadi console nor using thunderbird are going to cut it in the long term.

Oops. I missed the point of the question.

So here is some feedback from somebody who is not one of the less educated users. I have been using Unix systems since 1975 ( yes, I am that old... ). I make my living programming industrial control systems and designing graphical UI's for them. I have been swimming in bits almost since they were invented  . Lots of years of experience trouble shooting this stuff.

I finally had to give up on kmail because I could not make it work on Mandriva 2010.2 no way no how!

That does not bode well for its use by the uninitiated.

I am not complaining, and it was not Mageia that did it to me. But it is puzzling that the system was changed like that and then released into the wild in the state it is in.

Good luck in your efforts to fix the problem ( there is no sarcasm in that statement... just a real wish for good luck ).

Hi, I noticed that since the last update on October 9th kmail no longer receive mail. The problem affects only one account. The sending mail is fine. I tried all the given solutions but in vain. Kmail doesn't report any problem, but hangs when I test incoming mail server settings. List of updates I send as an attachment.

Darr.. I fixed my system by moving to KUbuntu and KDE 4.9. Not much help here I grant you, but it all got too hard.

Are people still having issues here?

I used to use T-Bird w/Lightning to manage four IMAP accounts and various Google Calendars. Although I do like customizable quality's of T-Bird, I finally got tired of its' slow speed and occasional crashes so I dumped it and lightning for Kmail and Korganizer. I must say, at least for me, Kmail is about 1000% faster and it never crashes. Korganizer incorporates my Google Calendars much better then lightning as well. I cannot see myself switching back anytime soon.

I run Cauldron on the Desktop-3.6.5-1 kernel with the following package versions:
Code: Select all
kdelibs4-core-4.9.2-1
kmail-4.9.2-1
korganizer-4.9.2-1
akonadi-1.8.1-1
akonadi-kde-4.9.2-1

Can someone list the bug this thread references?

Is this with POP3 or IMAP? FWIW, Thunderbird never crashed for me, and it's quite fast.
And as many people as i see complaining about either Kmail or Evolution, i don't want to switch to something else :)

If you do switch from T-bird to KMail you might want to avoid using the Maildir format in KMail. That is what I had, and it was a pain to transfer the Maildir emails over to T-bird, which uses mbox. If you keep it all mbox, it should be easier to go back to T-bird should you want to do that.

IMAP always. I access these accounts from various clients on different machines. I did not import my mail from Thunderbird to Kmail just had Kmail read from the IMAP server. I actually still use Thunderbird on another machine (rarely) and I access these IMAP accounts on several different devices throughout the day. e.g. My cell (Android), my work cell (RIM Blackberry), etc. I don't see the point of importing and exporting mail with IMAP. (As long as the server setup correctly).

Kmail, does use more resources via akonadi, nepomuk, mysql, etc., but I prefer to put the load on services rather than the application itself at the time of my access request, if that makes sense. Also, some of my folders are pretty monstrous and I think the mbox files were just too big. At least that's my guess. Whatever the case, the difference for me is night and day.

I'm sure some machines would get bogged down with the aforementioned services etc and if I was using POP I'm sure things could very well be quite different.

The issue still remains. I can't receive any mail, but sending is fine. In window 'settings POP3 account' when I press button 'automaticlly detect server settings', progress bar is changing and as 100% is reached the window hangs.
