Request for MATE desktop in Mageia

Postby jeevanism » Sep 4th, '12, 07:41

Hello All,

I am downloading Mageia 2 DVD version, and I know it has KDE,4 gnome 3 and other desktops. I am a gnome user but I dont need gnome 3. I need old gnome, luckily, MATE desktop project provides that. Is there any repository/package that I can install MATE desktop?

Not available via the official repositories currently, and was already discussed in other threads:

I hope MATE [or any other project which have the GNOME 2 feature ] will be included in Mageia 4. For time being, I may use XFCE

Mageia MATE with Gnome 2

Postby jeevanism » Sep 13th, '12, 06:59

I am so much addicted to Gnome 2, I dont want to use gnome3 or KDE. I would like to build MATE desktop for Mageia but I have no idea how to make a RPM from source. Any helpful sources/tips would be nice.

thank you

Some initial reading:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Packaging_for_beginners

You may want to consider joining the packaging team:

Jim

There are already mate packages in cauldron, and so those will be available in Mageia 3.

What about tweaking GNOME Shell to make it easier to use, for example, by installing the three MGSE extensions (mgse-bottompanel, mgse-menu, and mgse-windowlist) that would add a taskbar and start menu to the DE, if it's possible to do so in Mageia, assuming it is.

There's also adding Docky to GNOME Shell if that would help, as well as Conky in order to provide a system status readout.

You could also install Frippery or Tint2 as alternatives to mgse-bottompanel, mgse-menu, and mgse-windowlist if you would rather use them instead or if they're easier to get to.

Merged the two threads, please look before opening a new one if this is not already discussed somewhere else (board search function)
