Samsung printer/scanner SCX4826FN not working

Samsung printer/scanner SCX4826FN not working

Postby olemadsen » Jul 25th, '12, 01:30

This printer worked out of the box with Mandriva, but I am having all sorts of problems getting it to work with Mageia 2. Initially Mageia did not recognize the printer when connected via USB. Then I found something called splix and installed it, so now the printer is recognized, but it does not print properly. When I asked for a test page I got umpteenn pages with nothing but slanted lines. There has to be a better way of doing this. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the response.

The printers.conf file located in /etc/cups is emptty. (That can't be right?)

The rpm query returns the following:

Code: Select all
[ole@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep cups
cups-drivers-foo2zjs-0.0-0.20120223.2.mga2
gutenprint-cups-5.2.7-3.mga2
cups-drivers-splix-2.0.0-4.mga1
cups-common-1.5.2-5.1.mga2
libcups2-1.5.2-5.1.mga2
cups-1.5.2-5.1.mga2
python-cups-1.9.61-2.mga2
[ole@localhost ~]$

The error log is as follows:

Where did you find and download splix, and how did you install it?

FWIW there's already a thread which describes how to install splix and setup the printer to use it: viewtopic.php?p=21685#p21685

Re: Samsung printer/scanner SCX4826FN not working

Thanks for the reply. I found splix on the Linux Printing website and downloaded it from there. I installed it via the normal rpm installation process. And by the way, on the website they claim that SCX 4826 works perfectly. Well, so far it does not.

Meanwhile, a little progress. On the Samsung website i found what they call a Samsung Unified Driver/Configurator. I downloaded it and installed it according to the somewhat cryptic instructions in the manual. It is a gzipped file, so one has to go thru the process as root which I find a little disconcerting. Much nicer to have a rpm type file to install.

So now I have an icon called "Samsung Unifid Driver Configurator". It works but only in a halfassed way. Some of the control buttons aare greyed out, such as "set as default" and "remove printer". Also it will not let you control where the printer is connected. It talks about mfp:/dev/mfp4 thru mfp11. None of which works. Fortunately the Mageia control center lets you do some of these things, such as set the default printer and delete those configurations that do not work.

Bottom line, I can now print from Libre Office, but only in portrait. Landscape outputs a blank piece of paper. And the scanner does not work at all. It is recognized by the MCC, but none of the drivers appear to work.

All very disappointing, especially considering that everything worked fine with no fuss with Mandriva 2010 Power Pack. I would have stayed there, but they stopped maintaining the thing. And I hate the later version 2011PP.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone is interested in buying a Samsung printer/scanner, I am open to offers.
Cheers

That thread is also about that landscape/orientation problem. Did you read it yet?

Yes, I did read it and I tried it. For the heck of it I just went thru the process once more and downloaded splix once more. Same result. The SCX 4200 driver does not work for me. The test page selection makes the printer spew out reams of paper, all filled with slanted lines.

The driver for the SCX 4826 series on the other hand produces a correct looking nice test page. Landscape printing however is no-go. It looks OK on the preview screen but does not come out properly, the text is printed halfway down the page, but in portrait orientation.

Thanks for sticking with me on this. There is proabably a fairly simple solution somewhere, if only one could hit on it.

I went back to Mandriva as an experiment, installed the OS on another PC. Results: Mandriva 2011PP does not support my printer. However, Mandriva 2010PP does support printing, even in landscape mode. For some reason the scanner function no longer works. (It worked fine before I started messing with Mageia, but 2010 is no longer maintained, so staing with it is not an option)

Printing a test page from 2010 reveals some interesting information: The driver used is Generic PCL 6/PCL XL, and the driver name is STP01368.PPD.

Now my question is: How do I go about getting that driver installed in Mageia 2?

As it is, I can print on that other PC via the LAN. Not ideal, but it works.

A second question is: Is there a generic scanner driver available somewhere, that I could use in order to get the scan function going?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

The first part turned out to be easier than I thought. It turns out that there are quite a few generic printer drivers available in the Mageia Control Center. I tried several, and they appear to work well. F.ex. one called Generic PCL Laser Printer, name generpcl.ppd. So far so good.

So why does the Mandriva 2010PP have enough smarts to recommend a generic driver that works, when the Mageia 2 and the Mandriva 2011 just gives up and tells you that no driver is available?

And the scanner still does not work.

IIRC some years ago printer management was done by a task named drakprinter,
but later it was obsoleted by the system-config-print,
so there could be some difference on their behavoir

about the scanner side, here a couple of years ago an user wrote:

"As for the scanner, it was again just a matter of adding its usb device id to the sane configuration."

have you tried to do that?
if you need more help please connect the scanner, wait a few seconds then type in a terminal

Code: Select all
sane-find-scanner

or
Code: Select all
lsusb

this should reveal the usb device id, then reading

Code: Select all
man sane

it should be possible to locate the right backend where add that device id

Thanks for the response. Here is what happens:
I go to MCC, select "Set Up Scanner" The reponse is:
Samsung SCX-4x26 series is not in the scanner database. Configure it manually?
I select yes, and up comes a long list of manufacturers. Under Samsung 8 different models are listed. I select one, and is able to configure it. However, when I exit MCC a message comes up saying: No scanners are found which are availabe on your system. So I am back to square one. I tried all the Samsung models listed with the same result. Also tried a couple of the Xerox models, but no luck there either.

So, at least the system finds and identifies the Scanner and the USB port. But how to get past that point?

I am not sure this is true, but I have a feeling that the driver for the printer and the scanner is in the same package. So if one could find a generic printer/scanner driver package, it might work. Unfortunately the info available on the generic driver packages does not mention this. I tried installing several of the generic printer packages. They all allowed me to print but no scan.

Meanwhile, the Samsung website no longer appears to know about the SCX-4x26. Very strange.

I think you should fill a bug report for that,
so that a developer will have a deeper look.

However there is maybe another way to probe,
here a user says that printer and scanner are working fine
with the linked new driver (jan2011)

have you tried that driver?
I haven't a Samsung printer/scanner, so I don't know how to use that driver

For what it's worth Samsung no longer provides or supports the Unified-Linux-Driver.

You can find copies of the driver on the web but I've found that it doesn't work well if at all with newer Linux's like Mageia.

To Tom: Thanks for the response, much appreciated. I am sorry to report that I have already been down that road. I downloaded the unified driver from Samsungs website (while they were still supplying it) and went thru the rigamarole of installing it. Suffice it to say, installation is not automatic, and you end up with a folder in the root directory, an icon on the desktop and who knows what else where else. It would be OK if it worked, but it does not. No landscape printing and the scanner does not work at all. I do better with any one of the generic drivers.

And yes, I did file a bug report.

To Ken: Yes, knowing that Samsung no longer supports their unified driver is actually worth a lot to me. It helped convince me that I am wasting my time messing with Samsung printers. Question is, what else should one buy? Recommendations anyone?

Cheers
