Where does it return no results? Also you should only search for the package name, broadcom-wl in this case
You did set the filter from "Programs with GUI" to "All" before searching?

the sofware manager results for broadcom-wl are:
broadcom-wl-kernel-3.3.6-desktop-2.mga2 - broadcom-wl driver for kernel-desktop-3.3.6-2.mga2
Prebuilt dkms binary kernel modules for the broadcom-wl driver version 5.100.82.112 built for kernel-desktop-3.3.6-2.mga2.

OK no responses

I would like to figure out how to get the wireless to work on this note book live before I do a proper install
what is my 1st step?
[I have a cat5 connection handy for troubleshooting]
there is a dizzingly large array of choices of media sources, which one(s) do I need to enable?
or is there part of the configuring of the wireless connection, that needs attention?

The repositories you need to enable are:
  • Core Release
  • Core Updates
  • Nonfree Release
  • Nonfree Updates
If you live in a country where software patents are not valid (or just don't care about legal issues), you can also enable:
  • Tainted Release
  • Tainted Updated
There aren't any backports at the moment, so no need to enable those repositories. You would only want to enable the Debug and Testing repositories if you are working with one of the developers to test a new package or track down the cause of a bug - i.e. only enable these repositories if a developer asks you to, and disable them again when you are finished.

Regarding your original problem, the screenshot of the Network Centre shows that the Broadcom driver is installed and working - it has discovered an access point with the SSID STI-30274 (I presume is your access point, yes?). So the problem is that it is not making the connection. Despite your sig, I don't know how to help you without you using a terminal ;-) In a terminal window, please type
Code: Select all
dmesg > dmesg.log

and attach the resulting dmesg.log file here. This should provide some clues as to where the fault lies.

P.S. One likely cause of your problems is that, by default, Mageia starts two competing programs to manage your wireless connection, the Mageia net applet and NetworkManager. Can you also type:
Code: Select all
ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep -i net

in a terminal window, and report the results (in a code block) here.

my sig is an expression of my frustration, that in spite of the multitude of gui tools, most experts will revert to solutions that involve terminal as the primary tool, ignoring all the hardwork involved in developing a user friendly distro
I do understand that there are many ways to craft solutions & sometimes there is just no substitute but to pop the hood & fiddle around with the guts

dmesg > dmesg.log
yields no results,
what am I missing?

Code: Select all
[live@localhost ~]$ dmesg > dmesg.log
[live@localhost ~]$ ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep -i net
root        14     2  0 10:19 ?        00:00:00 [netns]
live      2506  2142  0 10:21 ?        00:00:08 /usr/bin/perl /usr/bin/net_applet

I enable the repositories as directed & updated before the above

Your analogy is a good one. If your car won't start, you wouldn't expect the mechanic to fix the problem without opening the hood, would you?
dmesg > dmesg.log
yields no results,
what am I missing?

The "> dmesg.log" part causes the output of "dmesg" to be stored in a file called "dmesg.log". If you've not executed any other commands in that terminal, I would expect it to be stored in your home directory, but typing
Code: Select all
pwd

will tell you for sure.

Alternatively you can just type
Code: Select all
dmesg

and copy and paste the output - but there will be quite a lot of lines of output.

the output of
dmesg
is truncated, [there's some rule about the max size visible]
output of
dmesg > dmesg.log
is also too large to post being some 8000 characters over the limit here
any hints as to which lines you are looking for?

problem with the popping of the hood analogy is:
the airshocks need topping off & there is already an on board compressor
the terminal is the equivelent of running a hotwire from the battery to the compressor, when there is a perfectly good control knob, if only I knew where :D

Did you try using the "Upload attachment" tab to attach the dmesg.log file? Although there is a file size limit for attachments, I think it is quite large. You could reduce the file size by compressing it, e.g.
Code: Select all
gzip dmesg.log

will produce a compressed file called dmesg.log.gz.

Alternatively,
Code: Select all
grep eth dmesg.log
grep wl dmesg.log

should find the information I'm interested in.

resuits of the alternate method
[live@localhost ~]$ grep wl dmesg.log
grep: dmesg.log: No such file or directory
[live@localhost ~]$ grep eth dmesg.log
grep: dmesg.log: No such file or directory
[live@localhost ~]$

Re: broadcom 4312 chipset

Well, the driver has loaded without reporting any errors:
Code: Select all
[   12.817180] eth1: Broadcom BCM4315 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 5.100.82.112

but it doesn't seem to be trying to associate with the access point. Can you try reconfiguring the wireless connection and then attempt to connect again, then rerun dmesg and see if any new (helpful) messages have appeared. Also the output from
Code: Select all
iwconfig eth1
iwlist scan eth1

might be helpful.

You need to run both commands as root.
Code: Select all
su -

in a terminal gets you there.

You didn't do what i posted, you did something else. Just compare what i posted and what you did. Proudly terminalphobic or not, if i give you some help and you don't do what is suggested, we can't really help you properly.

For a short explanation:
su is short for switch user, if called with no username after it, the default is to switch to root user.
a - behind su means to also initalize environment variables (i.e. initialize a login shell instead ob using a subshell, but this detail doesn't matter in your case).

So, the terminal correctly interprets your commands as switch to user iwconfig or switch to user iwlist, as it clearly tells you there is no such user.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

One of the problems you are having is interface swapping - in the last dmesg output you posted, your wireless interface has become eth0 and your wired interface has become eth1. I don't know any way to stop this happening if you are using a live CD (admittedly, I've never used a live CD...), so instead of the commands I previously suggested, just do:
Code: Select all
su -
<you'll be prompted to enter your root password here>
iwconfig
iwlist scan

I'm not sure why dok feels the need to go off on me
by now I would think he would be well aware of how very little skill I have for understanding or retaining any of this stuff

Sorry? I didn't go off on noone, just tried to mention that you didn't copy&paste a command which was posted.
And then i tried to explain it to you. Ahh :x whatever i say some people always misunderstand it.

Come on guys, you know the doktor, don't you.
Then at least, take some time for his signature, it 's all self-explaining.

Keep the good work up doktor5000!!!

My best guess is that it is an encryption problem. Can you post the output of
Code: Select all
su
cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1

(change eth1 to eth0 if your wireless device has come up as eth0) - but please X out your wireless encryption key before posting!

Also, could you try briefly disabling encryption in your access point, just to see if you can then get a connection?

Having said this, I had a lot of trouble getting my Broadcom wireless card to work during the Mageia 2 alpha/beta testing. Sometimes only the wl driver would work. Sometimes only the brcmsmac driver would work. Sometimes nothing would work. I eventually solved the problem by replacing the card with an Intel one!
