New subforum for solutions/hints etc.

Postby doktor5000 » Jun 11th, '12, 22:20

Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a subforum for stuff which wouldn't fit into a MAQeia, but which offers readily available solutions/hints, like f.ex. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2761 so this doesn't get drowned in all the other support issues? FWIW, i've marked it as [SOLUTION] but maybe somebody comes up with some tag which fits better, and/or is widely understandable, maybe [HINT] ?

If you mean something like the "Tips and Tricks" as in Mandriva then yes it would be a good addition to the forum.

I'm not sure what we should call it here though.

Good idea. why not call it "Tips"?

Why not "Wand" to stay with the magic.

BTW here's the first candidate for that viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2780#p20751
for windows problems reboot; for linux problems be root

Well, "wand" totally fits into the theme, but is not easily/widely understandable for novices (IMHO)
And i've already posted the first candidate, so queue up in line 8-)

I like "Tips and Tricks" ... what about all the others?

I had thought that the name should be different than that used in Mandriva but as I can't think of a better name my vote is for "Tips and Tricks".

After all nothing is written in stone so if someone comes up with a better name later it can be changed.

Would be very nice to have some magical linking.
Though "tips and tricks" will suit best, we always can use that as some kind of sub-title.
People searching for tips and tricks will find their place anyway.

Those not aware have to be pointed anyway, and this makes it no need to specifically call it "Tips and tricks".
So we could choose for something like "Wands" or "Scrolls" or whatever our magical brain conjures.;)

How about Wizard's Apprentice?
Or Apprentice's Handbook?
Or in the spirit of alliteration: Secret Scrolls? Sneaky Scrolls?

Sounds even that inviting, nobody would even doubt not to visit. :)

Adding to the list
The magician suggests ...

On the contrary, this sounds very serious..... it would be where I would look first, even before going to "tips and tricks"

So my vote is for this proposal :)

Really nice, by the way it does not need to be serious

Hands up, who's against it? Noone? Then if everyone is happy with that, seems like the way to go :)

My heart likes "The Magician Suggests" better, but my mind thinks it should be "The Magicians Suggest" :?

Please decide fast, so my heart and mind won't have a reason to argue anymore ;)

I would say that "The Magician Suggests..." to be the one that has the nicest ring to it, but that is just personal preference.
Both are good candidates and actually they are also rather much alike :)

It maybe hard to do but I would suggest that each "Spell" be limited to one post editable only by the origanal wizard or a moderator with a link for discussion thereof in the appropriate sub forum.

If it could be limited to only the first post, then that would be a bonus.

But there is one other thing to consider. Shouldn't instructions like these "tips and tricks" be stored in the wiki? That's what it's there for, I would say?

Yep, definitely. But currently noone looks in the wiki ...

Perhaps that's because there's no direct link to the wiki on the forum page?
There is a link to Support which in turn has a link to the wiki.
There is also a link under Community and under About us but it would be better to have a direct link.
