[SOLVED] No sound after upgrading to Mageia 2

[SOLVED] No sound after upgrading to Mageia 2

Postby tapksa » May 28th, '12, 22:28

Hi,

So, I recently upgraded to 2. The upgrade resulted in a bunch of problems, and I'm trying to fix them one by one. The only major problem right now is that I have absolutely no sound anymore. I have never had sound problems before. Because of that I also have no experience on how to start solving this.

I've checked pavucontrol, alsamixer and kmix. Nothing muted or 0%. Sound works on Windows.

Pavucontrol lists two output devices: High Definition Audio Controller (is this my HDMI output?) and Built-in Audio Analog Stereo. alsamixer lists two devices by the name "HDA NVidia". In case you wonder, I have one HDMI port, it's on the motherboard. Draksound says that I'm currently using "the ALSA 'snd_hda_intel' driver", which "is default for my card". PulseAudio is enabled.

This is all the info I can think of right now. If I forgot something, do ask. If I need to provide info on my hardware, you'll have to tell me how to find out. I don't have any documents on the insides of my pc, sorry for that.

Thanks a lot. I'm happy to see the strength of this community even if the distro is young.

Which desktop environment are you using?
And please show the output of
Code: Select all
grep sound /etc/modprobe.conf
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

KDE. (4.8.2, I think.)

Code: Select all
[tapksa@antarktis ~]$ grep sound /etc/modprobe.conf
alias sound-slot-0 snd_hda_intel
alias sound-slot-1 snd_hda_intel

Hi,

There are a few debugging steps to follow here when such problems exist, but you've already managed to do a couple things that bypass some of them :)

Can you "play" some sound somehow (e.g. in your favourite media player). You likely will not hear anything (unless the problem magically fixes itself!) but while it is supposed to be playing, run the following commands:
* amixer -c0
* pacmd ls

Then attach the output of each here or on a URL somewhere and I'll advise how best to proceed.

Cheers
colin

Re: No sound after upgrading to Mageia 2

Hi,

OK, so there are a couple interesting things here...

Firstly you appear to have a manually loaded sink in there. I presume this is a manual change you've made in the default.pa file to load e.g. a digital output in parallel to the analog one?

Anyway, the sound from Clementine appears to be playing on your HDMI device rather than on your built in sound. I presume you did not intend to use HDMI by default? Are you using KDE or GNOME? As you are using Clementine I'll presume you are using KDE. If so go into systemsettings -> Multimedia -> Phonon. You can use these priority lists to order which device you want to use for different categories. Unfortunately clemenite does not appear to advertise itself as a "Music" app, so you'll need to use the default category (select the "Audio Playback" header on the left.

If this doesn't fix it for you, it may be because a specific stream move happened with clementine (which overrides the priority lists). Just go into kmix, find the clementine stream (third tab along) and right click on it. Under "Move Stream..." there should be a "Use default for category" option. Choose that.

Hope that helps.

Hello. This is my first post and i'm a complete noob so forgive me if i don't speak the linux lingo.

I had the same problem as the OP with an hd install. Now i'm tinkering around in vb to get everyhing working before i do another hd install and i got the sound to work by changing multimedia - phonon - audio hardware setup - device configuration and set it to LFE on seperate Mono Output/Amplifier in system settings/hardware.

Good luck to all and thank you for making such a fast loading kde distro.

Well, I had this problem before I did that. I was reading the sound problem threads on this forum and I saw instructions on how to get HDMI sound (it has never worked for me). In fact, I haven't even checked it yet. This screen doesn't have HDMI - otherwise I could use it and connect my speakers to my screen.

Okay. The Test button works. I've tried preferring "Built-In Analog Stereo" and then "Simultaneous output" (HDMI + Built-in), still no sound in Clementine. Or Amarok, or Firefox.

"Automatic according to category", I guess? Still didn't do it.

No such option. In fact, there is only one setting, "Playback (Built-in Audio Analog Stereo)". The test buttons work.

Thanks for the help, both of you - but still facing a problem.

Your stream is likely still going to the wrong device.

I can only recommend the following:
1. remove any customisations to the default.pa file you made, including manual sink loading. This can interfere with devices and prevent opening the one you need.
2. If you do not use any HDMI, use pavucontrol or systemsettings' audio hardware setup tab to disable your 2nd card (the HDMI) by setting the Card profile to "off". such that you only have one sink available.
3. Disable the simultaneous output in paprefs.
4. Reboot.

It will be nigh on impossible to select the wrong device in this setup. You can then potentially re-enable the other devices as/when you need them to work out which setting is going wrong.

If you want to really look at things in-depth, the "pacmd ls" output I mentioned before tells you exactly where the stream is playing: You can actually do "pacmd list-sink-inputs" to show only playback streams and it will clearly state which sink it's playing on. If the sink is NOT "alsa_output.pci-0000_00_05.0.analog-stereo" then it's playing on a the wrong device.

Another anomaly is that your default intput device appears to be a monitor output rather than a real mic... I'd fix that before you try to do any VoIP :)

Re: No sound after upgrading to Mageia 2 [SOLVED]

That did it. Thank you!!

I'm going to need HDMI sound at some point, but if I can't figure it out, I'll look for solutions or ask you people. Anyway, that's then. I'm happy to be able to listen to music again. Thanks a lot!

No worries. For reference, the next version of PA should have more information regarding why a given device is used which should help when debugging these things.
