Made my day already.

Mageia-2-rc-LiveCD-GNOME-Europe2-x86_64-CD.iso
Mageia-2-rc-LiveCD-GNOME-Europe1-Americas-i586-CD.iso

Both booted to a working desktop on my Dell Vostro 1015 laptop.
Nautilus opens and works just fine thereby my reported Bug

is fixed.

Lots of testing in the next days.

Installation took just 20 minutes into VMware® Player 4.0.2 build-591240.
Code: Select all
cat /etc/issue
Mageia release 2 (Cauldron) for x86_64
Kernel 3.3.4-server-1.mga2 on a 4-processor x86_64 / \l

During first reboot following message appeared:

Code: Select all
Failed to start Load legacy module configuration      [FAILED]

After first reboot updates were offered right away:

Code: Select all
The following 4 packages are going to be installed:

- cronie-1.4.8-5.mga2.x86_64
- lib64blas3-3.4.0-2.mga2.x86_64
- lib64parted1-3.0-3.mga2.x86_64
- parted-3.0-3.mga2.x86_64

319B of additional disk space will be used.

649KB of packages will be retrieved.

Changed options in selection-menu in software-management to: "All/All" instead of "Packages with GUI/All".
Disabled medium "core media" from media-configuration.
Because for installing VMWare Tools, Dolphin was needed right away.
Don't remember this was the case in earlier releases, but no menu was to be found.
This was easily worked around by issuing "Ctrl+M", which brought back my so beloved menu.

Checked whether my most used programs were starting without errors:
Firefox, Konversation, KTorrent, Libre Office, GIMP, Gwenview, KSnapshot, Okular, Amarok, Konsole, KWrite, Dolphin, K3b (could not find burning-device, will take some closer look, but do not really worry for this is the case in a virtual machine).

Some changes made to make me feel more comfortable, like the standard font for example. My first choice is Droid Sans, but you know, this is about personal choices and so not important.

Love the look and feel of the release candidate.
Finally: big thanks to all those volunteers making this all possible.

Naaa, FWIW I've now got a local repo for both
Mageia 1&2 and collectively they represent
about 153GB. That'll go up by another 80GB
when M2 is released and Cauldron starts on M3.
I sync every day with:

I've a clean install using:

Mageia-2-rc-i586-DVD.iso

Also a successful sync with my local
Mageia 2 Repo followed by some basic
packages install, http, ftp, awstats,
NFS, updates and then a reboot back
to a desktop, then a commanded power-off.

Stumbled on a small wrinkle with webmin
install but got it to run. Will look at
that later.

Off to the baseball game. Cheer for
the local team.

Mageia 2 RC looks good to go.

Back later

Maybe this is connected with bug: 4997 (Problem with the DVD player / recorder,it is always still inaccessible). I had similar troubles in B2 or 3 but they were resolved with updates.

I'm very satisfied for now but I need to do some more tests. Especially upgrades. Unfortunately I didn't managed to do that with B3 but B2 worked pretty well. There were just some small quirks. Some services didn't start by default and their state was not refreshed in MCC but IIRC that is fixed now. Despite transition from MySQL to MariaDB my web application worked well so I can continue with development on that. Does anybody know how to check that?

Slovenians finally got Mageia live CD (Europe 1). I tried to check if other distributions also have them in our language. I didn't find lists of languages for live CDs of some popular distributions in about 20 minutes. But I think that there are not many at least mostly translated from installation to live desktop.

Booting live CD from USB went well and pretty fast. I successfully tested some apps and added a few others. I missed mc as a strong recovery tool on live CD so I filled a bug 5808: (mc (midnight commander) is missing on LiveCDs M2RC). Then I successfully tried fresh Live install from that desktop. It worked well but that installation I had to reboot from tty because menu and tray icons didn't showed any dialog about that. I will do some more test to see if this is reproducible.

I have workarounds for not yet fixed bugs I experienced with exception of Transifex. Currently I translate in Kate.

To me it seems that Mageia is very well polished overall and community is very open and nice. So I'll try to continue to contribute translations, tests, bug reports, money... as much as I can. I started with Mandrake 6.something and my computer at that time was very low end but I pretty much stick with Mandrake/Mandriva. To the day of first alpha of M1 of course. IIRC I switched my production system even before first beta. That satisfaction pulled me to translation team. I'm also glad that my wife also didn't have much trouble switching to linux.

So to all involved in this release I'm grateful. But special thanks goes to developers as they work really hard and to our forum supporters doktor5000 (for me he is already adamw of Mageia), isadora and wobo.

I do hope for some cool Tshirts from Mageia. We do have some very talented artists so maybe they'll come soon. The ones that we bought are a bit too "official" for my taste. I would also like to spread some fun because linux is not only work .

I didn't post in "Welcome to Mageia forums" yet but this is some information from me and my work.

Have fun,
Filip.

x86-64 rc DVD will not boot.
Checked md5, k3b verified burn.
Investigating.

Cheers

Update:
Gremlins in the CMOS memory - boot device order changed. Slapped it around, now OK.

First trial: Notebook, Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI Radeon HD 3430, Intel PRO/5100 wireless, 64-bit install.

Still problems with ATI graphics when installing from DVD - have to manually select vesa driver (nokmsboot workaround stopped working in beta 3). Installing radeon-firmware allows radeon driver to be used.

Still need to disable NetworkManager service to get wireless working.

I installed from the 64bit DVD and am not impressed with the handling of the Radeon bug.

I do get a screen telling me that I have to enable the Non-free repositories and install the firmware for the card before I can use 3D effects.

Unfortunately booting the system leaves me on tty1 with no GUI, just the last boot messages.

Using Alt+Ctrl+F2 and logging in as root I can use drakx11 to change to the "xorg | vesa" driver which does give me a working desktop.
However I still cannot find a driver that gives me the performance I get with Mageia1 nor one that allows me to use Kwin effects.

I'll gather more information then if there is not a bug report on this I'll file one.

I run a small Simple Machines Forum BBS that I upgraded to Mageia 2 RC this afternoon.

I ran the upgrade off of the i586 DVD. It took about 20 minutes.

After the upgrade, I connected to the repositories, ran an update, and installed LXDE (I *really* don't like GNOME 3). This was probably another fifteen minutes.

Once this was done, I realized that Apache wasn't running. I had to copy the "/etc/httpd" and "/etc/httpd/modules" folders from my Mageia 1 backup to the upgraded system. Apache still doesn't show under "system services" under the MCC. I am manually launching it from /etc/rc.d/rc.local, but it's working fine. Also, the mysql configuration files were still there after the upgrade, but I couldn't find the executable. I didn't realize that it had been replaced with MariaDB, which threw me for a few minutes... actually about half an hour. Once I installed MariaDB, everything was fine, and, unlike apache, it does show in the system services window. Everything else seems to be fine.

FYI, my system was originally a Mandriva 2010.2 system that I converted to Mageia 1 back in September 2011.

Isadora,

I installed Mageia 2 RC (KDE LiveCD 32bit) on virtualbox and after in a real partition of my HD (a clean install) and both installations occurred rapidly and smoothly, everything happened very well. (see my first impressions of Mageia 2 Beta 3)

The configuration of my nVidia graphics card occurred very well, without problem.

The Mageia 2 RC is with the graphics look very nice and organized

KDE 4.8.2 is very nice

The dracut warning no longer appear on startup (was occurring in Mageia 2 beta 3, and after a clean install of the Mageia 2 RC, dracut warning no more appeared on startup)

All installation of the media was automatic (after, I choosed media 1,3, 11,13, 21 and 23) and installing packages without any problem occurred.

I installed several packages quickly:

libreoffice-3.5.3 (latest version released on May 2, 2012 :)
filelight
gkrellm
hardinfo
kdf
firestarter (package mageia :)
chkrootkit
rkhunter
quassel-0.7.4
GoogleEarth (fedora/opensuse rpm)
get-skype (package skeleton mageia :)

and many other packages (table of software) that I'll try to check when possible.

Congratulations for the great work and thank you for the Mageia Team.

Are you sure it is related to this bug?
I've always seen this error at system start, no matter whether I experienced the start delay or not.

Downloaded Mageia2 RC 32bits DVD , The installation of my E17 has gone very well, work is very good, but three small problems.

The first problem is that the display manager "Lxdm" there are functions that do not work "autologin, menus and icons in minor things.
The solution to this problem is to install "xdm".

The second problem is that EFM does not work, restart E, every time you try to use it.
The solution to this problem is to install Thunar (It's that I have always used for E).

The third problem is the Plymouth, works poorly, every time you leave a bubble in the logo, the screen goes black, so haste three times until you get the login mananger.

Thanks to all the Mageia team for their work, is pretty good.

And wobo, your suspicion about relationship to bug4772 is rightly, reading the comment by Colin:
Completely unrelated and also harmless (it just means your modprobe.preload*
files have some strange things in it, but it's not a big problem overall. It's
likely that the modules are just already loaded via udev and thus don't need to
be manually loaded.

Mageia 2 still have deadbeef player beta and it's released to stable like two months ago and there is newer stable 0.5.4 what fix bugs found in 0.5.2.
Second problem there is in updates testing pidgin 2.10.4 but there is only i18n package loaded to repo so i can't install it my arch is i586,so i just looked to x86_64 testing there is all pidgin packages in updates testing.
