tigervnc package rebuild?

Postby billr » Apr 19th, '12, 21:37

Is there any hope of getting rebuilt packages for tigervnc-server and tigervnc-server-module to fix bugs 4722 and 5045, respectively? The former can be worked around, but the later can't. I was hoping an update would be present in Beta 3, but alas it appears not. I really didn't want to install all the dependencies required to rebuild the server module, but I'll do that if there are no plans to update it.

I do not have any information about tigervnc, but have you considered FreeNX for your remote access?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_technology

In my experience NX is considerably smoother and demands much less bandwidth than Vnc

The downside of NX is it can be a bit of a pig to configure. I wrote this guide for Mandriva to try to make it easier

FreeNX is available in Mageia 2 Beta, but not in Mageia 1

Thanks, I'll check it out. Does FreeNX support a repeater or relay like function that lets you connect via an intermediary host?

In Mageia 2 Beta I find nxagent and nxproxy (and some nx related Xlibs), but no FreeNX package to provide the framework. Because of the way it works with ssh tunnels, it would do for my setup as I can create a reverse tunnel from the remote machine to the local machine. I looked at your Mandriva notes and it looks like it will helpful once I find (or build) the FreeNX package.

Sorry I do not know, but as you see it uses ssh as the transport layer, so anything you can do with ssh can be done with NX.

It seems that freenx is not yet building in Cauldron. There is a bug open on it

You could probably install freenx from the Mandriva 2010.2 repositories. Most of them work OK in Mageia 1 if not 2
