Attention to the following message by obgr_seneca at the Mageia-blog:

Mageia needs your help with the artwork for Mageia 2.

We’re short on artists, so we’re calling on everyone in the Mageia community who has any talent with graphics.

If you would like to see your favorite photo in Mageia as an alternative background, or if you can make an outstanding graphic that fits into Mageia’s look and feel, we hope you’ll support us: contribute your work to Mageia and to the Mageia community as a whole.

Also, this as good a place as any to discuss the contest.
Post your thoughts and questions here.
And since the blog post didn't have this hyperlinked: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Wallpaper

Is it absolutely necessary to create a own flickr account to participate?
Or is it possible to give you a link to my own webspace?

cheers,
Bernd

Maybe just post a link to the wiki page, and try to contact one of the artwork team members to make sure they know about it,
or in your case, drop a message to TeaAge? Maybe have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Artwork_team or https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Artwork_team_members

Artwork for Mageia 2

Postby DShelbyD » Feb 13th, '12, 17:18

I have a photo I would like to post, but I'm perplexed by the requirement that it be scalable to 4:3, 16:9, etc. Is there something I need to do to it? Or is the issue that it not look stretched one way or the other when adjusted to different screens? Or is it that if you have to ask this question you shouldn't be posting? ;-)

Thanks for any suggestions,
David

Well.... it's complicated.
Theoretically speaking, if your image is 1920x1440 pixels, then a little math shows us the following:
1920/1440=4/3 Which means that it's a 4:3 resolution. (We can simplify a little and call this 16:12)
1920/1200=8/5 Which means that it's a 16:10 resolution.
1920/1080=16/9 Which means that it's a 16:9 resolution.

So, going from very square to very rectangle we have:
Code: Select all
  16:12      16:10        16:9
1920/1440  1920/1200   1920/1080

So, you have a few options:
You can create your original image that is 1920/1440 pixels large and then crop it to fit the other resolutions. (This is probably the best).
You can create your original image at whatever size you want and then stretch/shrink it to fit the resolutions. (This might result in some weird looking stuff).
You can create one image that is 1920/1440 pixels large, submit it, and then if it is chosen the artwork team (probably) will randomly chop it up to fit the proper resolutions. This is like the first option, but you have no control over what parts get chopped and how the end result looks. But it is the easiest.

Also, will one of the mods please move the question and answer to https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1879
Also, math (even simple math) is not my strong point and there could be errors there.

Dont panic!

I delivered my images as 3:2.
This is enough to get the impression that they are the best ones ....
When I win, I have time enough to crop them and deliver them in different sizes.

Not difficult at all.
Open your image, select Image>Canvas size.
That will open a little dialog box where you can change the size of your image.
On the top you'll see two text boxes for width and height, with a chain linking them.
Click the chain to unlink them, then input the desired height or width.
For example: if your original image is 1920x1440 then you might want to set the height to be 1080 so that you'll end up with a 16:9 resolution.
Click somewhere and you'll see the change takes effect in the preview window.
There will be a little box around part of your image. Since the new size is smaller, anything inside that box will be in the new image. Drag the image around until you are satisfied, then click Resize.
And that's it!
Be sure to save the newly resized image under a different name. ;P

Thank you both for (1) the encouragement and (2) the tutoring. I think I'll go for it.

With appreciation!
