I'm always fascinated by seeing how others have set up their desktops. To get things started here's my plain laptop Mageia 1 desktop: http://linuxpunks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/snapshot1.png

Let's see yours!

Interesting, i've not yet had time to test it in cauldron.
What's your opinion about it? Does it feel snappier than KDE?

Hi Doktor!

It's not bad, especially if you consider that it's a very new DE. Although KDE 4.80 is now really fast (faster than former versions on my machine), RazorQt feels snappier. Everything is a little bit faster. Except the right-click context menue on the desktop, there is a one second lag. Also startup is really fast. LXDE is a little snappier and faster than RazorQT, but only the tiniest little bit ...
:D
cheers,
Bernd

Edit:
For parts of the configuration, you need to edit config files - which works good. USB-drives are mounted immediately - like in LXDE. Development and improvement goes on, as one can see at the google-group.

I like RazorQt, and I will use it as my main DE in the following weeks ...

Edit 2:
I tried RazorQT with Openbox (which is standard). But you can also use Kwin (you've never seen such a fast Kwin ... ) or Metacity ...

On my 7 year old laptop (Lifebook S7020) Gnome is to heavy, and LXDE is perfect. Found some theme instructions at lxde.org forum (http://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1416). Nice desktop even with LXDE?

I like a simple clean look to the desktop and especially like that the default look for the launcher bar in KDE is the classic style. It seems counterproductive to me to have new software consume the new CPU power on visually useless frills on screen instead of being used to do work faster...

As an example with Windows 7: I ran the performance score program for Windows 7 with the deault desktop settings that in clude Aero and other useless settings in a G570 Lenovo laptop with i3 Intel CPU and GB RAM. The score was 4.7. I then went into all the various settings and made the computer look as much like Windows 98 as possible. I then ran the performance rating again and the score was 5.7, an increase of the rating of ~22% or so..

Clean, simple, fast are the best settings for me, I think.

Cheers all,

gcd
