Do you hate the IaOra theme for KDE applications ?

Postby Sfiet_Konstantin » May 6th, '11, 22:06

Hi
I made this pool to see the number of people that hate this theme.
I personnaly feel that this theme is not very adapted to KDE4, althought it was very cool in KDE3.
The 1st thing I do when installing mageia is to revert to oxygen.
Sadly, with some bugs, KDE applications revert to IaOra when not launched in a KDE session, and I discovered that kdelibs was patched to force iaora as the base theme. This pool is also here to see if it is worth making a bug report for removing this "hard coded" theme.

EDIT : HAHA : I do not know how to make pool, so here is the (temporary) list of propositions :
- No, I like it, keep it default
- It does not matter
- Yes, remove the patch (keep it as an alternative, and remove it's dependency to KDE)
- Yes, remove IaOra and replace it with oxygen / oxygen-gtk
- Other

Hello there,
personally it doesn't matter at the moment as this is not a final release. I would think when we get the final release there will be the ability to change the theme and customization to suit ones own taste. :)

The ability to change theme is already here (hello systemsettings :))

Same here. Looks like "Can start polls" was changed from the default to "No" in user roles.
Why?

Why?

Because Mageia is all about users. Mageia trusts the community.

Oh wait. Sorry. My mistake.

No, pls don't do that. "Mageia" is not a person who does this or that. So it was not "Mageia" who did the settings in the forum. It was done by one person and to change the default setting he may have had a reason which we don't see. I'm sure he will explain it to us.

I don't know. I'll try to find out.

Just looked at the default:
it's in group permissions (registered users) - forum specific permissions:
Start polls - yes
Participate in polls - yes
Change polls - no

I reserve "hating" to more worthy subjects. :D

But I agree, at least, in the present buggy implementation laOra is a big nuisance - not the style to be installed by default with KDE. See also buzilla #1997. Submit an enhancement bug to make Oxygen the default style?

Yes, tested in a section where I have no special rights, works. Thx a lot, Germ!

(I think this poll should be _after_ Mageia 1 is officially released, and the user base using the forums has, hopefully, increased, so that the poll represents the opinion of as many users as possible; there's no rush since the change will, if it's agreed on, happen in Mageia 2).

Yeah, you are quite right, I will keep it open for Mageia 2

Agreed, of course we all are aware of the fact that such changes will not be made in Mageia 1.
See this as one of the many "pre-brainstroming brainstormings" :)

(I don't think QtCurve should ever be the default, nothing against it as a widget theme, but from my point of view, the biggest pro Mageia will get by switching to Oxygen is lessening the maintenance burden; i.e. if IaOra-kde is the default the KDE team has to fix bugs in it, whereas if Oxygen is the default, it's maintained upstream, and upstream are quick to fix any bugs that manifest in any KDE app. So I don't think a non-upstream theme, IaOra-kde, should be replace by yet another non-upstream theme, Qtcurve.

Just my humble 0.002 €).

While Oxygen is not at all bad and has the above mentioned advantages, is also the best way to say to the world: Look how utterly unoriginal we are.

i would prefere dont touch upstream default settings in any case. If the default KDE style is oxygen and you are a KDE user, your KDE default style should be oxygen.

Yep, totally agree with that. I'm also against changing the upstream wallpaper. Or at least remove the "Mageia" text and replacing it with "Some KDE distro".
